I'm sure that's exactly why he did it.
I saw a clip of this on Conan earlier and as soon as I saw it I thought "Ok, now let's see how many people uploaded this clip to youtube, and how many will play around with the clip".

Honesly, I don't know even one of his songs, even to this day. I think his haters made him more famous than anyone else. It's almost gotten to the point where I want to actually like the lad (or at least pretend to in order to piss people off) purely to go against the fashionable 'hate-overkill'. I wouldn't, mind you, because I don't listen to pop, and I'm sure it would make me wretch, but I digress.
