The best way it can be decided as to which of us chose the best team, would be for us to play the game Strat-O-Matic. (although even if we did, it would still be subjective.) I played this for hours when I was a kid, and then in my 30s and 40s with five other guys. We would meet up once a week and spend all evening playing this game. There was no internet back then.. but now there is! www.strat-o-matic.com

By the way, great thread, Galactic!

Best of all-Time Cal Ripken Jr.

Ty Cobb. I don't think we will ever see another player play the way he did. Today, they would either be banned from the league or arrested.

I've only seen one person mention a pitcher, and he mentioned the wrong one.

If you go by records, the only answer is Cy Young.

Of all records in ALL of sports, his all time wins and career no hitters are the most unattainable records of any other records in any other sport, and will never, let me repeat,NEVER come close to being broken.

Ruth's HR record came down well before the "steroid era",but if you shot up a guy with Super Soldier Serum that they gave Captain America, there's still no chance in hell that his win total will fall.

As for hitters/fielders,The best player I've ever seen in his prime is Ken Griffey Jr.

A guy who doesn't get nearly enough props has got to be Frank Thomas.Probably THE best pure right handed hitter of the entire 90's.He would've gotten a third MVP award in a row if Giambi wasn't juicing during the '95 season.

No love for A-Rod?

Not trolling here. The three years of steroids (seems he's the only one with the class and dignity to admit his wrong doing and apologize to the fans where others shrugged and smirked) aside, he still has very impressive starts and ability.

You kidding?! The only reason what he admitted it was because he was going to get outed .He made a preemptive admittance before it could snowball into something like the Roger Clemens situation.A Rod's people told him to admit it,he didn't all of a sudden have some sort of battle with his conscience.

So NO.No love for A Rod!

Oh,and Andy Pettitte did the same thing that A Rod did,and so did Jason Giambi, and Gary Sheffeild. They admitted it and moved on like nothing ever happened.

If it has been proven that Roger Clemens used roids, then I will definitely toss him off my "best" list.

Garry: Mom, I never toss off to anything!
Lucy Wallace: [crying] You told me you were combing your hair!
Garry: But I was! I was!

Weird Science.

I've got to step on you about this. Frank Thomas's name should never be mentioned with the above. He played great for 10 years then injuries happened. Not his fault but as far as career totals he falls way short.

I also take exception with Cy Young. Dead ball era. In the years that Cy Young pitched (20) there was a total of 1039 saves for the entire league. 50 per year average. 40-50 starts per year. Best of his day but would never go through 162 games against these well conditioned monsters of today. Why hasn't anyone started 40 games in the past 20 years? Because the matrix of the game says they don't have to. That's why those records will never be broken. Apples vs orangutans.
