Who is the Greatest Entertainer of all-time?

Danny Kaye could do it all.

Good answer. In 1960 my parents & I drove from Chicago to LA, we stopped for a couple of days in Las Vegas. They took me to see his nightclub act. I was the only child (6 at the time) in the audience. The staff came and got me and put me at the front of the VIP table. Danny Kaye did his whole act to me. Years later when he had a TV show I was sometimes disapointed with some of the bits because I heard them years ago.

I was reading some of these, and I think people were confused with the question... It wasnt who do you like, it was who is the best "entertainer". Alice Cooper as much as I like him didnt "entertain" as many folks as MJ, period! Nor did he reach as many. IMO. MJ's music reached more poeple than I would have to say anyone, but it wasnt really all him... Please read below.

There are so many (and sorry in advance for the misspellings) ... Top 6 IMO would be:

6) MJ (Micheal Jackson)... Dont like him, but he had lots of good teachers, and people behind him, He didnt right most of his songs, he had amazing dance teachers, the greatest producers, and song wrighters working for him, so a lot of that wasnt him IMO. However, no-one, and I mean NO-ONE has ever reached and touched as many people with his aura as he did. Just to bad it wasnt all his. His light was put out to soon, his best had not happened yet.

5) Frank Sinatra... He moved crowds not with just his voice, but his aura.

4) Billy Extine... The prettiest male voice ever recorded, and smooth as silk.

3) Elvis... Never liked him, but he was a true entertainer. However he only entertained for the most part a spicific group of people. If he would have lived he would have been even greater!

2) Prince... If you have never been to see one of his live shows then you may not comment on this... Simply amazing, he playes lots of different instruments (drums, guitar, bass, piano, etc..., better than most one-dementional artists) he rights all his own music, he plays most of all his instruments in his music, he produces all his own stuff. He is top notch. Because he does pretty much everything himself, in the entertainment field, he is almost #1. No one mentioned does more himself for entertainment than Prince.

1) James Brown... No one can dance, sing, and show like him Not, MJ, not Hammer, not Prince... None of them, MJ even said it himself... James brown is the best! And Im suprised he wasent mentioned. Whites loved him, Blacks loved him, and he loved himself. Saw his documentery and he would go through 3 pairs of shoes a night! He even stopped a whole town from burning to the ground with his concert the eve of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. assasination. Talk about entertainment power!!! HE (JB), will be missed more than all!

Jackson is a fantastic entertainer. I don't consider him the best, but I can't see how people would consider him terrible as an entertainer. He's an all-round kind of guy, amazing singer, amazing dancer, and his concerts and videos are always top-notch spectacles.

I'm sorry you find this thread is "subjective", just wanted some good discussion. :D.

I don't understand why you would be "sorry" that I find this question to be subjective. Anytime a question is asked that attempts to elicit opinions, it is by its very nature a subjective question. If it weren't, any answer other than the "objective" (factual) one would be inherently false and not worth discussing.

Are you saying that it is unquestionably an established fact that Michael Jackson was the greatest entertainer of all time? If so, why ask for other opinions? If not, why be "sorry" that others find the matter to be subjective?

I think we have some good discussion so....does it bother you that I happen to disagree with your opinion?

:confused::dunno::wtf:

I didn't interpret the question the way you did at all. That was not what was asked. The word "entertainer" can take on whatever meaning the individual wants it to be. It's not about numbers.....it's about the special qualities that it takes to be able to "entertain" someone.

If it's about numbers, how in the world can you put Billy Eckstine on the list and not mention Elvis, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Gerorge Carlin, Robin Williams, etc???

In 30 years from now, people in Clubs will still be trying to dance like Michael Jackson. And in 30 years, "Billie Jean" will still sound as fresh and fucktastic as it does today...

Without question. And there will still be Elvis impersonators and Hound Dog will still sound as great as it did back in 1956.

Lots of you younger folks can't directly relate to some of the artists like Elvis or the Beatles (want to talk about "audience reaction"....ever seen any clips of how the throngs of fans would behave whenever the Beatles came into view??). Again, this is entirely subjective so everyone's opinion is as valid as another's. There's no "right" or "wrong" answer....it's all in the eye of the beholder.

I understand that alot of people can't stand country but as an entertainer it's hard to beat Hank Williams, Jr.. Jumping all over the stage, doing a solo on every instrument and he had one hell of a presence. Just look at all the rock and blues performers who list him as an influence. Garth Brooks or Toby Keith would not have been able to do what they did without Bocephus doing it first. :2 cents::thumbsup:

Oh yes I will second that! Hank Jr. is a tremendous entertainer....extremely versatile and all over the stage. I saw him play at an outdoor concert in Central Florida back in the early 80s. It was like 95 degrees that day and he played for over 3 hours in the sweltering heat. It was one of the most incredible performances I have ever seen. Yep....Hank Jr. should be given consideration for sure!

Good catch, TRW!

Yeah I have. Have you ever seen or been to an Elvis Presley performance and seen the reaction of the audience? Is audience reaction at any given performance the standard that establishes who the greatest "entertainer" of all time is? Again, it's all very subjective. I stand by my statement.
I'm with you on that.
Having hysterical fans doesn't means beeing the best.

The greatest entertainer of all time ?

Somone like Elvis or maybe thez Beatles or the Rolling Stones.

Whoever wrote the Bible is the greatest entertainer of all-time. That fucking thing has entertained more people throughout history than every musician, actor, author and comedian combined. I'm just sayin'...:dunno:

Tough call.
There really is no answer, like Jag said its very subjective.
I'll say the Three Stooges, those guys crack me up.

In my opinion, Michael Jackson is the greatest entertainer all-time, but I could care less if people disagree. If I did, I would be bashing anyone who didn't say Michael Jackson.

I just asked you a simple question on a statement you said earlier, trying get inside your head, and maybe see things from your point of view. Thats all. You did answer my question and I thank you for that. In no way was I trying to say you were wrong.
I think we have some good discussion so....does it bother you that I happen to disagree with your opinion?

Yes, we do, but there is nothing wrong challenging people's statements. I think it leads to a better discussion. I'm not going to freak out if someone disagrees with me. Actually, most people in this thread disagree with me. It's all good. ;)

I have no issue with anything you have said in this thread so far other than your expression of sorrow over the fact that I consider the question to be subjective. I was puzzled by that. Otherwise, I would agree....it's all good.

Peace....:glugglug:

It's difficult to compare entertainers from different periods;in the past they didn't have effects , professionally choreographed backing, amplification and hype.

although i will admit i have never watched him live i dont think michael jackson was that great a perfomer, his songs were good but i dont think he's as amazing as people are making out, i think they're just saying cause he died, i think the greatest performer, for me anyway, is Freddie Mercury I mean this man stole the show at live aid, where Queen were just of a few amazing bands playing so what more can you say?

Agreed. M Jackson was certainly one of them! A talent! (RIP :angels: and in a better place.
