I was wondering how many boarders were able to speak french (as their official language, of course) ?
No:o
"Tout-de-suite" is all I know.:banmyself).
That's better than the other kinds of -philes out there (necro-, pedo-, zoo-, copro-, etc...) :eek:I might consider myself a Francophile.
Actually, "French" Fries were invented in the White House during Washington's presidency. He had asked a cook to make a special meal for a foreign dignitary who was visiting the US. The cook, at his wit's end, decided to cut strips of potatoes, thinking he would do something with the later, only he accidentally dropped them into boiling oil just before dinner. With no time to correct his mistake, he served them to the guests, who loved them and demanded to know what the were eating. The chef told them he had used a new French method for cooking potatoes, hence the term "French Fries". :hatsoff:French fries are called pommes frites, and they were brought to America by American GIs who ate them in Paris during WWII. I suppose that means steak avec pommes frites est la cuisine classique au bistro?
^
Hmm. Washington's time? That seems a bit early. I'm not sure anyone cooked with oil back in the 1780s. :dunno:
My story eventually connects pommes frites with Ray Kroc and JR Simplot and voila..the MickeyD's "french fry" is born...
You might be right. I think I was thinking Lincoln, but I might be wrong. It happened long before the 20th century in the White House, I'm just not 100% sure about the president, although I was almost ready to bet my left nut that it was Washington. flylicker
