Try the Crimean War I do like A.J.P Taylors epilogue 'In Finland, the Crimean War had revealed the backwardness of the existing communications system, and in June 1855, an electric telegraph link was established between St Petersburg and Helsinki, which was soon extended to northern Finnish towns. Together with the beginnings of the railway system a couple of years later, this network helped to pull the country’s different provinces into a distinctive geographical unit while facilitating a wider and more speedy dissemination of news not only from different parts of the country but also from Europe and overseas.

Thus the Crimean War helped, in an indirect way, to pave the way for Finland's independence in 1917 as a truly European nation.'

And this was taken from the Finnish Embassies own website!

Ps: Lewes and the South Downs are lovely in the Summer - you should visit some day, get that chip off your shoulder :D

-Diplomats writings are often vague.

Ordinary people think that England is a country that does not respect other states.

I think that English are decent people, but your goverment is not always act wisely.

-Yes, coastal landscapes are always impressive.

No one here said all soldiers fight for money. But many do. I know many who joined the military because they had no better career options, and thus, the military was their best option. They joined for the money that the military provides. Even though it's not a lot, it's better than menial labor, which was basically their only alternative.

Your comment was pretty ignorant because many soldiers give fuck all about pride/honor/love for country. They just want the paycheck. It's admirable that you care about your countrymen, but not every soldier thinks like you.

In my view a soldier who defending his country and the mercenary are two different things.

I wouldn't call A.J.P Taylor a diplomat - and having a quick look at 'amplicate' I can see that it attracts some of the internets leading intelligentsia! Try reading a few books rather than the puerile crap posted on a website - do you actually believe everything you read on the internet!

I have to say denuded anticlines do make lovely landscapes, but then I blame the French for having an Alpine orogeny in the first place ......

I have read a lot of history and the memoirs of Churchill. (omg)

Generally website boards containing a lot of hate male, but some of those negative comments describes reality.

England declared war on Finland 1941;

Such events prove that England was/is the enemy of Finland.

That first link is in Finnish, and when I searched "Oland War" on the english wiki, nothing came up around 1854. Also, I'm not very sympathetic for the Finns in WWII, as they signed a pact with Hitler and the Axis. Obviously they didn't have much of a choice (the enemy of my enemy is my friend...), but if you decide the to join the Nazis, who have pretty much declared war on all of Europe and the rest of the civilized world, you can expect to get your ass paddled by Europe and the rest of the civilized world.

None that I saw, please show us some that describe reality!

As TheSpokenWheel has said Finland did side with the Nazis, obviously Finland was in a difficult position - but Sweden remained neutral and dispite pressure from Germany continued to honour it's aggrement to supply nearly all the UK's demands for ball bearings throughout the war, whilst Norway during it's occupation maintained a very high level of resistance to Nazi rule with many Norwegians going beyond just resistance Birger Stromsheim is just one example of what one man can do!

-Maybe this is a better link;

-Germany and Finland were brothers in arms, but the goals were quite different.

The Germans wanted to take over the other countries and our goal was to defend our country.

The reason why Finland and German were allies during the WWII: Soviet aggression.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter_War

-Sweden was not neutral country because it provied the material to Nazi-Germany.

-A brave man, but in general Norway was a pretty easy thing to Germany.

I fully understand Finland's reasons behind its role in WW2, but you can't align yourselves with the countries that are aggressively trying to take over the world and exterminate an entire religion and then be pissy about the people who tried to stop you. This is one of those "let bygones be bygones" situations. I doubt any reasonable Brit hates Finns because of their part in the war. Mutual understanding should come into play here: They understand you were desperate to get the Soviets off your ass, you understand that they were trying to put an end to Hitler's (and his allies') invasion/genocide.

I am glad that you have read the history of the second world war, so you know that America was allied with the Soviet Union and you were also allied with a party who commited genocide.

War is hell.
