Which one? Kindle or the Nook?

Will be using it primarily for movies / books.

:dunno:

I haven't held one yet, but reviews for the Kindle Fire seem to be pretty good (good value for the price). It comes down to your budget, but if I was going to be watching lots of movies on a tablet, I'd probably wait for a bit and see if the iPad 3 gets the high resolution/Retina screen. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I *think* the iPad has a bigger screen than either the Fire or the Nook Color - but it also costs a fair amount more than either of them. But if not the iPad, I'd probably go with the Fire, as the content from Amazon is pretty well stocked.

We have the Kindle Fire and the iPad2. I like the Fire, it's my new toy to play with... but if you're planning on ONLY reading books and watching movies, they're both good for it. Using the Kindle app on the iPad - it's really easy. The Fire plays Amazon instant movies and such, but I haven't tried Netflix yet on it. (Perhaps I should try tonight... hmmm...)

they say the kindle makes good kindling and the nook you shove in one and forget about it.

or was that my great aunt bessie?

I know several people who have a nook, and have problems with their wireless network at home. They can't connect at all. Nooks will absolutely not communicate with several brands/models of wireless routers (D-Link routers are really hit and miss with the nook). Similar problems do not seem to be coming up with the Kindle.

Both are pretty good products, though. Check out pricing of media for each before buying, too.

Thanks, Dirk. That was actually a concern of mine - the WIFI connection. QVC had the NOOK on sale last night for $279.

Books still work, no connection issues or batteries to deal with.

...And she won't inadvertently download any of Grandpa's porn, when visiting.;)

and they cost about 35 fucking cents. books are the way to go. REAL books.
Yeah, I know. I have a shit load of books. However, I don't want to carry every fucking one of them when I'm on the road. Where as the Kindle / Nook will hold something like, two hundred thousand gazillion books. And, the fucker only weighs about 14 ounces.

D-Link seems to be hit and miss with most products to be honest.

Never had any luck with those routers.

As for the original question, sorry mate, no idea, I like the feel of a real book in my hands.

realistically though, how many books can you read at once? figure you go on vacation (its a right pity you'd spend it all reading, but whatever, its your fake hypothetical vacation). are you really gonna read a (what was it) thousand gazillion books?

i might be different, but i usually only read one book at a time. otherwise, its full on hysteria. i tried to bounce from dracula to the andromeda strain and that just wasnt working. ;)

Tried Netflix on the Fire. Works just fine. :D

Thanks, Jinxy!

You're welcome!

Actually, I'm not certain how much the Kindle Fire weighs (yes, I know I could look it up), but it feels like the weight of an iPad2. My original Kindle is waaaaay lighter than the fire. The Fire is smaller than the iPad, yet feels like it weighs about the same? Kind of threw me off for a bit, but I'm used to it now. I don't go anywhere without the thing! :)

I do have a couple of gripes, like when I turn the volume all the way down it somehow still plays notification sounds (probably some setting I haven't found yet). Also it seems that every time I turn it on it has to reconnect to the wi-fi. Very frustrating if I'm trying to do emails.

My wife gave me the Nook a couple of months ago. It works great. Streaming videos, apps, and everything.
I haven't bought the iPad, but have thought about it.

I don't want the Kindle. I know the Fire caught up to the Nook for the most part, but I like having a cup of coffee and browsing through the books at the old brick and mortar store. So, I stay away from Amazon for everything. I know it doesn't amount to much, but it is my way of voting. :)
