I just moved to Los Angeles from the UK and will be here a good few years (I'm a PhD student). I got a bike to do little commutes to the office but am pretty much reliant on my roomate and people on my course to take me places. Tried using the buses/metro but it takes too long, so I need to get a car. Trouble is I'm living off a really tight budget and can only muster about $5000 (6 grand max).
What car do you people think would be best in my situation? I'd like at least a 2000 model with low miles on clock, though gas/mileage doesn't really matter that much. Looked at some Kias, Ford focus ets on Craigslist and cars.com--are these the right places to be looking, and is it best to get it from a dealer or owner?
