What musical instrument is easiest to learn?

As the year 2005 ends and the year 2006 starts, one of my New Year's resolutions is to learn to play an instrument, as opposed to just play with my instrument. Now, I figure the kazoo is really easy to learn (duh!) but I want to choose a real instrument and right now I'm stuck between the guitar, the piano, or the saxophone, whichever one of them is easiest. Now, I'm sort of leaning towards the sax, to serenade some of the ladies I know ;) and I don't know if this is true, but I believe that if I learn to play it I should have no problems playing the clarinet or the flute (no, I'm not going to band camp). Piano would be cool, but I don't have room in my place for one and keyboard is not the same as piano, and since I like hard rock, I'm also leaning towards the guitar, though I don't think I should play "Raining Blood", which is probably the type of music I'd end up playing if I lern guitar, to serenade a lady, plus having to learn all those chords seems like a hassle as opposed to the sax where you just press some key instead of getting your fingers all tangled up to make the proper sound. So, if any of you guys and gals play any of those instruments, can you please give me your opinion or any advice? :wave2:

piano is fairly easy to pick up and is easy to read, i mean musically read(notes, keys) .

guitar is next as it requires persision as well as patience.

never tried the sax so i wouldnt know about that

Piano, IMO, is quite easy to play, not much trouble in reading the music and its almost enjoyable....but the guitar, great with the ladies and an excellent skill to have, well worth the time to learn.

The "one-eyed skin flute" only took me one try to master... :D :1orglaugh

Seriosuly, though... It depends on your varying aptitudes. Some people are more rhythm-based, while others are more melodic. Also varying are hand-eye coordination requirements (much harder for piano than tuba, for example).

There are so many factors, it's really hard to say what's easiest. Some people simply have no musical aptitude or sense of rhythm, pitch, or key. Some people have it flowing through their veins.

Musical instruments are sort of like foreign languages - you either have a knack for learning/playing/speaking them, or certain ones better than others, or none at all and stick with your mother-tongue.

Give several a try before deciding to quit out of frustration; you might jsut need to find the right one for you. Playing & writing music are two of my greatest joys. I can't even read music anymore (never could very well, even when I did), but I've taught myself the alto saxophone and piano, and I learned how to play French Horn formally. Composition and arrangement of music, to me, are much more natural than the actual physical playing of the instrument.

Just have fun!!!

ive been playin electric guitar for a while and it was pretty damn hard in the begining but its important that you dont give up and keep trying. Man those sweet sounds a guitar can produce. Never played piano and i dont think i ever will so i cant say if its easier or harder but i recommend guitar unless anyone else says the diffrent

I'd love to be able to play the piano, but I can't see how that'd be easy. My fingers aren't even good with typing.

I play drums, and that's pretty easy IMO, but worthless without a band.

I tried many instruments growing up, but I sucked at them all except the drums. :(

As someone who plays sax to pro level and also guitar and to a lesser extent piano, I'd have to say that I found the guitar the easiest to learn.
All instruments are difficult to master, but you can get results pretty quickly on the geetar, ie play something that sounds OK, while developing a decent tone on the sax takes lots of time (years!) and dedication.
And if you want to pull a lady, you can't go wrong with the electric guitar

Have some beans..wait a few hours ...and you have the best instrument around....the toot toot flute

Well guys, thank you all very much for your opinions, I think I will try the guitar for now, especially if I find a good price on one, plus if I buy an electric guitar I could wear headphones to practice without bugging anyone around my place. But like I said, it's a new year's resolution so I will have a bit more time to think about it and then go look for one.

My suggestion is try each instrument out at a nearby music store to see which one "feels" right for you then go with that one. I agree that persistance is the main requirement to learning any instrument. I can read sheet music myself & have played the piano, an electric keyboard, trumpet, some simple guitar and my kids' recorder (a woodwind instrument). Have also enjoyed the harmonica.

Anyways, just have some fun with the instrument you finally choose.

I play guitar and harmonica....harmonica is real easy to learn IMO. All you have to do is master the breathing technique and the rest is super simple. Guitar is easy if all you want to do is play a few open chords but hard to master it as a lead player. It helps if you have long fingers. Good luck!

Brass is quite easy, just blow a raspberry. Trumpet, French/English Horn, Tuba, Sousaphone, Mellophone, all are controlled by 3 plungers and a fourth ,octave, plunger. Easier to read music IMO because they have a narrower octave scale than other interments. But I say trombone just for the fact that it's fun to slide the slider.

That's the thing about the guitar that I think would frustrate me that I don't have the dexterity to go from chord to chord, even when I type I do make a lot of mistakes when I try to go real fast and when I was a lot younger in school we had a music class where we were required to play some kind of flute and I found it a bit easy, I seem to have better dexterity when I keep my hands closer in front of me than when I have to keep them separated, like when playing the piano or playing the guitar. So I guess I will go ahead and go to a music store and try out what feels right for me then.

Any instrument can be as easy or as hard as you want it to be. Drums can be easy if you're playing a simple 4/4 rock beat (such as bass with hihat to snare with hihat to bass with hihat), but a blast beat in 32nd notes at 120bpm is hard.

Guitar can be easy if all you're doing is playing powerchords, but it can be hard if you're riffing and doing advanced harmonies and sweeping arpeggio leads.

Bass can be easy if all you're doing is playing the root note of the chord the guitar plays, but it can be hard if you choose to do advanced rhythms or arpeggios or whatever. Blink 182 isn't hard on bass, guitar, or drums for that matter...Nile, or Opeth, or Necrophagist is, however.
