Maybe to you but not to some. I had a fan buy me well over a thousand dollars worth of stuff off of my wish list. Plus, some of us make friends with special fans so to say that they don't know us at all isn't always true. I have fans whom I've grown close with and I send them gifts and cards for the holidays as well.

The bottom line is a lot of times stuff like that helps with the job. Better content, self shot content, social networking, access to apps like kik to message fans, etc.
Hell, my tv came from a fan who makes PAYMENTS on it because he's not rich.
Did I ask for it? No, he went out of his way to convince me to accept the gift.
Just like my fans have bought me a million PS3 remotes when they break so I could keep gaming with them.

1. I buy you a camera and you use it to take better photos for your site, which I am a member of. Everyone wins, especially you since I only buy the best camera kit there is!

2. I buy you a camera and you don't really do anything with it and you end up re-selling it or giving it to someone. Not fucking cool.

3. I buy you a camera and the guitar-playing quasi-meth-head named Sean/Shane/Sven/Steve that you have for an on-off boyfriend steals it or breaks it. Also not fucking cool.

4. I buy you a camera and it ends up going to your webmaster/photo-dude. Definitely not fucking cool.
