Depends which one your talking about Calm.
The first Gene Wilder really made it. Great performance from him. But then again I did first see this when I was very young.
The second as with most remakes was terrible. It was just too weird and off beat for me.
I enjoyed the new version alot actually. I was never too big on Gene Wilder. I think Depp gave a great performance and he was such an asshole to the kids which I found down right funny.

There he fights the attitudes of the other pilots and an old story of his father's death in combat that killed others due to his father's error. Maverick struggles to be the best pilot, stepping on the toes of his other students and in a different way to Charlie, a civilian instructor to whom he is strongly attracted.(thanks to IMDB to story line)
