Stripperland. It didn't take long for me to catch that this film is a parody of Zombieland. Exactly as the title indicates, it's Zombieland with strippers. The characters are based on the 4 main characters, even the lead young man, sounds like Jesse Eisenberg. I was wondering if he was going for the voice. There are very small nods to other movies, like Dawn of the Dead, Shaun of the Dead, and I think even Evil Dead. I think that because Fran (parody of Tallahassee) gave Idaho (Jesse Eisenberg guy who isn't actually from Idaho, and that's a running gag) a bat that says "Ash." The reason for that name becomes revealed later, but still man, Evil Dead.
So the plot is similar to Zombieland, an outbreak that only infected strippers, and I guess can only hit all kinds of women. 2 guys and 2 girls come together and settle on going to Oregon, which apparently has the highest stripper per capita in all of the United States. I want to go to Oregon now!
There's the rules of killing a stripper that's done like Columbus. Character wise, the people are pretty similar to the originals, although I think West shows a bit more sex desire than [NOBABE]Emma Stone's [/NOBABE] Wichita. Virginia is an adult, unlike Little Rock, and is a bit naive, but also has a bit of a hidden secret. There's more to her basically than Little Rock, who was just a little girl.
Fran and Tallahassee are the most similar to each other, one loves Twinkies, another loves baked good. One lost a son, the other lost a significant other after coming out of a sex shop with bags full of dildos!!! That was fucking hilarious.
The comedy really carries the film, because this is a really low budget ripoff. The special effects are cheaper, and sometimes it looks unsettling. Specifically the shotgun wounds, they looked disgusting, but not sure if it was actually on-body makeup or video editing just copy/pasting that spot on a body. So yeah, ropy moments here and there, but the comedy never dips and is consistent. There are high points with the gore, so the violence isn't all bad. CG blood here, worked decently, but I'd rather have squib action.
I loved Zombieland, and since this is a knock off, the film's quality depends on how well it knocks off the major film. It does it so damn well, therefore I loved it. There was a draw to this. I dove into Zombieland not knowing about any special scenes, or Bill Murray's cameo. For Stripperland, on Prime Video, I saw that it had [NOBABE]Linnea Quigley[/NOBABE] in it. I was watching this at first, waiting for her to appear. She didn't until the end, so I had to endure the film. I did very well, that by the time it happened, I was already well into the film. Her appearance was just a bonus, the frosting on top.
Lloyd Kaufman makes a little appearance too, as Idaho's dad. I assume they got him in exchange for the masturbating scene from Idaho. He was looking at some porn, supplied by Brookland Bros, and his room had a Troma sticker on the wall, and posters for Toxic Avenger 4 and Tromeo & Juliet, two awesome movies by the way. The cast is really small, it's those special appearances, including a guy playing a celebrity in a parody of Bill Murray's cameo, a mad scientist and his guards, and old people. Then of course is the main foursome. Everyone else, as in the zombies, were strippers. I really think they were all strippers, not like they had to do proper acting, just wear makeup that is admittedly weak. They basically have dirt and marks on them, but skin tone isn't different. Some faces are made up, others seem untouched. Most of the face shots though, they're eating someone, therefore not much exposure of the cheap makeup, but it's there.
The doctor bit is different from Zombieland, it's a guy who wants to turn the zombies into housewives, well, slaves. Retrowivery, as he put it. You'd think a movie about zombie strippers, there would be nudity. There wasn't much of it. Topless zombie in the opening credits, and a woman topless but covered in blood and stuff. That's surprising, but all of them wore skimpy outfits, lingerie, bra and thongs, you name it. One rule about these strippers, they love hip hop music. Supplying it in one scene is fucking Daniel Baldwin. I forgot to mention him, yeah he appears in this one sing, raps (or someone dubbed his rapping), and the girls are dancing, shaking their buns. Butts, best parts of the film for sure.
This is longer than Zombieland too, at 103 minutes, which is a bit of a stretch for this kind of movie, but it filled in decently. There's no confirmed backstory about the outbreak, the 4 characters had their theories. There is some green screen action, a lot of scenes are similar to Zombieland, some are very different. Another different scene is the cameo of some pimp at a mall. He was hilarious, but he got eaten up by the zombie strippers.
The reason the 4some went to Oregon is so they can meet the girls' grandmother, aptly named "Grambo." Idaho was willing to go automatically, while Francisco needed convincing, and gets it when the girls said that Grambo's a championship winning baker. Virginia is kind of a black sheep. First of all, she's supposed to be the youngest member of the group. At the very end of the film, when everything seems fine, she looked much older, I almost thought it was a different actress. Wrinkles tell the story, clearly she had no makeup on in that scene, and her hair went from black to red. Also, she was a former stripper.
Fran's lover Ash turned out to be a guy, which was hilarious! West Virginia was trying to get on his dick, very subtly, but she got the bombshell from the guy. Another thing that keeps stripper zombies at bay is money. There was a funny scene where they just threw 1 dollar bills, because this movie is cheap. The zombies didn't kill, were more concerned with the Washington's.
Fran wins the film as the badass, while West comes in a close second. Virginia's alright. That just leaves Idaho. I was close to totally disliking him, because if you've seen Jesse Eisenberg do this schtick, there's no reason to see anyone else parody it. Also since Eisenberg tends to play the same character, no matter what the film, that's even more reason to not be into anybody trying to be like him, because the guy is like himself all the time in movies. He had hope spots, but for the most part tiptoed the line between good and bad. Even West didn't like him, kept telling the guy to shut up.
He won one scene, just one. After Grambo makes her triumphant entrance with a bunch of old people with weapons, because senior citizens don't flake and leave like the young ones, Idaho said the line of the movie. "GILF!" YES! He was referring to [NOBABE]Linnea Quigley[/NOBABE] of course, oh my goodness, and that's after the woman herself had what was the line of the movie. "The kick-ass begins when I finish my fine cigar." She throws her barely used cigar. "Done!" Fires a machine gun and wastes zombie strippers. Rambo ain't got shit on Grambo.
So the film is great if you like Zombieland and low budget films/knockoffs. I kept thinking it was an Asylum film, but nope. I loved it, and proves how great Prime Video is. I think they have more obscure movies than Netflix and Hulu, therefore I've been using that service more than the other two. Plus, searching on them is a bit easier thanks to imdb linking to them. On Netflix, I'd have to sign in, and half the times I'd have to sign in on Hulu just to search for stuff. Hopefully their download option will include PCs and laptops. Anyways, sweet film.
I did see Ong Bak 2 before this. I thought it'd be a direct sequel to the first movie. It's not, and I think it's Tony Jaa wanting to present ancient Thai history to an international market, as this was set in their old imperial times. I think "imperial" is the right word, not sure. A different character that Tony Jaa plays, more of a revenge tale, but it's stuffed with some mysticism and scenery that fluffs the film up. To a point where it clearly took more liberties than the first one. The first one seemed to be action first, story second. This one really leaned towards story first, action second, and it really felt like the fighting scenes took longer to get to than the first. Once it kicks ass, it kicks a lot of ass, so in the end I liked the shift in direction. Some stuff could've been trimmed down, but damn those fight scenes are too good to complain.
