Believe it or not, Tom Savini's remake of Night of the Living Dead.

I LOVE NotLD and am a huge fan of of Savini, but I avoided this at all costs for nearly two decades. However, I got it as an XMas present and reluctantly watched it. It's good, actually. Surprisingly good.

The zombies are great. Savini didn't go overboard, but they're certainly more ghoulish than the original. A few of the zombie actors are just emotionless, lifeless and lustless...as if attacking the living isn't a means to end a hunger, but a a reluctant physical compulsion....like breathing in high altitudes when you're already sick. And it works perfectly! It's hard to explain beyond that, but I think this was the best example of making zombies fit into a real life context. Just imagine Terry Schiavo trying to eat your face.

SPOILERS?
The movie is practically shot for shot until the end...and then things get weird. Barbara becomes a badass who values survival above all else. Instead of being catatonic and a burden, she becomes Sarah fucking Connor in T2 (but cuter and with very visible nipples). Also, Ben, who owns one of the most iconic endings in cinema history, now suffers the same fate as the original, but only after he's actually infected. That really negates the beauty of Romero's climax, but still, it was a fun 90 minutes besides that.

I've yet to see any other Romero remakes besides the 2000-something Dawn of the Dead and The Crazies (I liked neither) so I'm glad that my only other foray was actually really well done. I'm now curious to see what else, if anything, Tom Savini directed.

Oh, speaking of Savini, Machete was pretty fucking great too. Except for every scene with Lindsay Lohan. She was just awful.
