What is a Latina anyway?

I see the term "latina" all over the board. More often than not, on the board, is means a brunette with brown eyes and a bit of a tan. (Anetta Keys, a Czech beauty, is called a Latina sometimes..... Lenka Gaborova, another Czech is too) The second most common type called a Latina is a mulatta (mixed race woman).

I have always thought of a Latina as a woman of the region from Mexico to c.Paraguay or so... and including native people and the mix of native and European blood. I've read a bit about the word, and though there is no perfect definition, it seems that most people are still using it incorrectly. Even my associates and friends in Central and S.America call a mulatta a mulatta and not a Latina.....What do you think?

well, for me a latina would be a girl from, just as you have always thought,
latin america (or at least with latin american roots...), hence the name.

who really cares? this reminds me of a joke I just saw on carlos mencia.

he was like why do hispanic americans always talk about how great mexico is? let's face it, mexico sucks. white (american) people know that they come from europe, but that doesn't mean they want to associate with it. ask a white guy what he thinks about euorpe and he'll say that it sucks. but you go up to a hispanic and tell him to say that mexico sucks, and he won't do it. This is because of our parents. my dad was always like mexico is great, america sucks. and I was like, if you like it so much, why don't you go back there then? and he was like ugh.. it's complicated...

basically what he's trying to say is that people relating to central america are trying to find a cultural category to fit into, and the one's that they have to choose from aren't always very acurate to represent them.

people should be aware of thier cultural herritage, that's a good thing that makes people wonderful and unique. but when it becomes such a crucial factor to define where a person fits in and belongs to, I think that it's putting too much emphasis on racial segregation.

There is controversy about the use of the term Latino.
Hispanics is a more widely accepted term. Hispanics are persons whose ancestry hails either from the people of Spain, or any of the various peoples of Spanish-speaking Latin America.

Today it's all about a certain look. Like you said dark hair, dark eyes, and dark tan.

I believe the term Latina in reality refers to Hispanics more than anything else but the description of dark hair, eyes and olive/tan skin can also apply to Greeks, Italians and etc etc. And they're not from Hispanic decent

I also wonder if some of the confusion is caused by people wanting to put certain people on a Latino genre based website because of how they look when in fact they know the person is not Latino. Anetta Keys would be a good example of this even though she is Czech. Anyway I think the term has evolved to mean the area BNF stated along with the culture and backgrounds of most of the people that live there. It probably isn't a technically perfect definition of a lot of people, but it is just one of those things that happen when a language evolves.

I believe Latino / Latina are made up words, just like Hispanic.
Ask a "Latino" where they come from, are they going to say "From Latin."
Usually people are classified from the country they're from, therefore, Latinas would be from Latin as Germans would be from Germany.

Latinas/Latinos is a term to describe someone from the Americas who's heritage can be traced to the Spanish or Portugese speaking countries. Even though French also comes from Latin, French-speaking Canadians are not considered Latinos. Basically...everything below the USA.
Even though some Europeans (like posted above) may appear Latino or are labeled Latino, they are not considered as such.

Latina comes form Latin and to be honest I had no clue that the first latinos are from Rome,Italy and what not but that's the true origin of the world.

Latina means:From "SOUTH AMERICA", "CENTRAL AMERICA" AND "THE CARRIBEAN". Since the proper way is to call The United States as NORTH AMERICA but is known as the white land. So they would be be called Latinos because that's of a Latin culture.

Either way Hispanic is the lower word for spanish people so LATINA sounds much more fancier!!!! (Hispanic was brough to the United States vocab. when they did the census on 1980' or 1970's by one of our fellow ex-presidents. (That's when they concluded if you were white,asia,African American or Latin better yet known as Hispanic to them.

So in general Latinos are the only culture or people that speak SPANISH by nature with their RICH culture. There is not such a thing as Czechs or Germans called latinos lol

If you speak spanish at home, you have a rich culture, you are all kind of colors since latinos were mixed with INDIAN,SPANIARS and AFRICANS we are the only culture that have all of those colors because basically it seems that every one tried to colonized us lol But over all if you carry those Starndars as:
1)Spanish Language
2)Culture
3)and you are from South,and Central America including Spain(the mother land of the spanish language)and The carribean they you are a LATINO.
