What do you consider when voting in elections?

This will no doubt be a fun thread.

When you vote in an election, what all do you take into account when determining who you will vote for? Do you judge candidates/parties solely on political reasons (how well they support your political ideals) or do you also take into account how well you think a candidate/party will uphold other things, such as values? I know there are some pretty big fractures in American politics between supporters of the Democrats and the Republicans and I recently read an article that stated a lot of votes in recent elections have been decided by Americans judging values to be important to them (say, for example, Bush's reelection in 2004) and others where it has not played much of a factor due to other reasons (such as the economy taking more presidence in 2008).

Discuss, but try not to kill each other...

American politics comes down to electability and the effectiveness of a candidate's staff's ability to discredit their opponent. No one campaigns on what they actually may or may not believe (mostly because they don't believe in anything), and once elected the partisan bickering disallows any politician the ability to achieve ANYTHING of real significance. Of course, why would elected politicians want to achieve anything of significance? Once elected, the name of the game becomes re-election, and the best way to get re-elected is to piss off the fewest number of people; the best way to piss off the fewest number of people is to do as little as possible so neither side of a constituency can object. American politics is a constant campaign, a paper-thin patina that covers, just barely, the embarrassing remnants of what American politics used to be.

Long story short, I don't vote, not anymore. Red tie, blue tie, green tie, whatever fuck you.

Which candidate offends me the least, and is the least treasonous.

How low can you go? If it's a lot like limbo.

Fiscal conservative and socially "liberal" candidates that believe in the Constitutional limits on Federal power. Sadly, there's never really a candidate that is able to win that believes in these things... :crying:

Since we're starting a brand new election season, I thought I'd give this a bump.

Hopefully more people shall enlighten us.

I vote for the lesser of 2 evils instead of the best person for the job. As I have said before, you will never get someone from any party competent because those tat can are not people who have "the look". Political elections are more like beauty pagaents. It's more if I can get you to like me than it is can I get the job done.

I'm a liberal so I vote for the Democratic Party. I favor universal health care, diplomacy over military action, stem cell research, the legalization of same-sex marriage, secular government, preservation of abortion rights, human rights, free and fair elections, liberal democracy and the free exercise of religion
