What do you consider when voting in elections?

I've got to look at what the candidates say. Cut spending. Cut taxes. Shrink government. Not just creating task forces or hiring consultants. They should have their plan ready to go forward with. If it works then they get re-elected. If not out they go.

What it really comes down to for me is, Party trumps Candidate. My party happens to be the Republican Party. Whoever is chosen as the Republican Nominee, is the man (or woman) who I am voting for. Simple as that.

Pretty much independent on all national elections (Senators, Congressman, Presidents) and then in state and local elections I can vote anywhere from liberal candidate to extreme conservative candidate.

If whatever group is supporting a candidate pisses me off, however - for example, hippies, atheists or warmongers - I will vote for the candidate they are against just because those sorts of groups make my blood boil.

When I was much younger and naive: I voted based on ideological reasons - then reality left me disillusioned;

After a while, I took interest again: I read through political programs, and voted based on who convinced me most, and apparently represented my ideas - then reality left me disillusioned, again:

Now in the present: I am willing to vote for whichever Candidate/Party is willing to pay me more for my vote.

But what if the candidate is obviously a poor leader? I could see how voting by party would work in a congressional election but when it comes to voting for the President you aren't at all wary that the President you vote for could lose the support of their own party?

Since a couple of years, there is an internet service called 'Wahlomat' (translates to 'Vote-O-Mat') here in Germany:

http://www.wahl-o-mat.de/

You can click through a number of pages with questions about lots of voting issues, and even weigh in differently about how important exactly they are to you, or if they do not matter to you.

At the end you get a personal diagramm showing which party suits you how well or not so well

Sunday is voting day in the farest norhern german state, Schleswig-Holstein, and I found the 'Wahlomat' very helpful

Of course, I read the flyers and watched TV features about all partys

No career bureaucrat cronies who have made fortunes off of the backs of the working class private sector.

A politician or politicians who don't always seek out the advice of his or her advisors when making day to day decisions.

A politician or politicians who have experience in private sector business.

No Ivy League politicians.

A politician or politicians who would actually consider how much sense this makes:

Letter to the President:

A politician or politicians who actually speak from the heart and mind while at the podium, i.e. politicians who can carry out their message with the fewest amount of notes ... a politician who doesn't stumble and falter when his or her teleprompter system fails.

A politician or politicians who has a strong desire for America to redevelop our industries, despite all of the pressure applied c/o the enviro goons.

A politician or politicians who sincerely want to rid this country of our national debt and not just kick the can down the road and increase taxes only to later blame the previous administration for it's excessive spending habits.

Dream fucking on! Too many people these days are dependent on the reckless spending habits of our federal, state and local governments... as long as the politician(s) can enrich themselves with their bad policies, only a revolution can turn things around.

.... are you locked and loaded?

I don't vote strictly by party. I always give the liberal candidate the first look because I'm inclined to agree with them on most issue but if that candidate doesn't impress me I'm more than willing to vote for a conservative or libertarian.

The personality of the candidate, his values, his past
The platform as a whole. I don't realy pay attention to each promise (at least, not the ones I would favor) because 80% are lies but I try to see the bigger picture.
The people who support the candidate

All politicians will make tons and tons of promises on the campaign trail but in realty they won't live up to more than 50% of them
