Actually, the moral of this thread is the question: Do you all see a draft in America's foreseeable future?
There's a strong case for a universal draft so that everyone has "skin in the game" when it comes to making decisions about sending our sons and daughters into combat.
Of course, this system was abused in Vietnam and the burden fell disproportionately to the poor and disenfranchised, so it's not without problems.
I know. My dad's friend said all he had to do was apply for college, make the grades and he was scott free. Then he just went into the reserves and he didn't have to go to that foreign nation and get dismembered.
Rangle tried to introduce legislation not long ago to reinstate the draft, for the sole purpose that there would be a mass uprising against the war from the younger Americans. I can see the logic. One way or another, I am getting shipped off to "basic" if they reinstate it for sure. I wouldn't mind shooting an M4 for a while, but I'll pass on losing my legs to an IED in Iran.

Charlie Rangle, along with 3/4 of congress belong in prison. If he were just a private citizen he would have been arrested long ago. There is no draft, and there will never be another draft because there are too many people who will volunteer for service because it offers a chance to better their own circumstances after their service is over.
I'm a little too old to volunteer but I would go to war again if I were recalled and I'd be proud to do it. What the hippie, liberal, wine sipping, tree hugging, communist dick suckers don't realize is that there is a bond between people who have gone into harm's way that goes beyond fraternal loyalties. There are guys that I've served with that I couldn't stand but if someone outside of our group voices the same sentiment, I'd kick their ass over it.

I would also add that children of the people responsible for sending troops to war(Congress) are exempt from draft status. During the Vietnam War, Sen. Gore, Sr. was a major advocate andwas harsh on those against it. It was told to him that it was easy to send men to fight when you son did not have to worry. There was a "discussion" with Al Gore Jr. and he "volunteered" for the military.
Now the American people are so poor that they will join the military becasue they have no other choice, Americans with principles and morals will never join even if drafted.

Unfortunately Scott s correct. Every person running for president with the exception of Ron Paul has not served their country in the military. And every one are defense hawks. Even Obama when it serves his purpose. Allen West is the one I would like to see run in 2016. He walks the walk...

Oh yeah, I also support the Second Amendment, the death penalty and dealing with illegal immigration unlike McCain/Kennedy. My big thing is I don't think we need anymore war. And TBH, I've met a number of service members who've done a tour (including my sister's ex boyfriend who lost his leg to small arms fire) and plenty of them have said they didn't want to be over there.
I'm sick of all the war-windbags that blast that shit all day. We've already wasted trillions - we need not waste anymore.
