Were/Are The Beatles Overrated?

Record sales are not the only way to judge a band. Oasis will never lead a counter cultural revolution. In 50 years, no one will have any clue who they were, but they will still be talking about the Beatles.

By that logic The Spice Girls are more influential than Pink Floyd, U2, and Michael Jackson.

Yeah...that's accurate.

See, I told ya they were overrated.

The Mop Tops are so overated it's outrageous. They are the ORIGINAL boy band, the first of its kind. If they had debuted today, they would be like New **** on the Block or N Sync. Famous for 15 seconds before turning into pop culture punchline. But because they came out in the 60s (and no one had heard their kind of schtick before), they are treated liked pioneers (which I suppose they were) of amazing music. IMO, their songs/lyrics are trite, banal, even elementary/simplistic. John Lennon, however, was a genius and was right to strike out on his own. The other three members ... meh at best. Give me the Stones anytime. :banger:

You don't get it. The Beetles were a band. They played instruments and wrote songs. New **** on the Block or N Sync were formulated and you can trace that back to The Monkeys. Before The Beetles all we had were The Beach Boys. Go look at any list of popular music and very few bands make the list. It is individual recording artists that dominate the market. And still today only a handful of them charted better than The Beetles in certain categories. You want to talk record sales? Here's a little tidbit. By October 1972, the Beatles’ worldwide sales total stood at 545 million units. To date The Beatles record sales are over 1 billion units worldwide. Not too bad for a band that only lasted 8 years and only toured for 4 of them.

"They're the best and still are. If you're going to be good you have to learn from the best. And they're the best."

/close thread. :)

And the Stones' lyrics aren't??? All they are is a sloppy Beatles, imo.

As previously mentioned, boy bands don't write their own songs or play their own instruments, and they don't decide to stop touring live shows so they can concentrate on pushing their musical boundaries in the studio. If you were to look into the details of their recording processes in those days, especially given what they had to work with in the 60's, you would gain so much more respect for what they did.

Elvis is The *****. The closest you can compare him to is Bing Crosby. Elvis was a sensation in country, R&B, and spiritual music also. His movies were very popular and a driving ***** for his music. He was able to change with the times. He died at only 42 so there could have been many more years of Elvis we won't get to see.
