Wandering SC governor admits straying

Anyone not see the writing on this wall? Anyone? Anyone? Anyone?

COLUMBIA, S.C. – After going AWOL for seven days, Gov. Mark Sanford admitted Wednesday that he had secretly flown to Argentina to visit a woman with whom he was having an affair. Wiping away tears, he apologized to his wife and four sons and said he will resign as head of the Republican Governors Association.

"I've been unfaithful to my wife," he said in a bombshell news conference in which the 49-year-old governor ruminated aloud with remarkable frankness on God's law, moral absolutes and following one's heart. He said he spent the last five days "crying in Argentina."

Sanford, who in recent months had been mentioned as a possible presidential candidate in 2012, ignored questions about whether he would step down as governor.

At least one state lawmaker called for his resignation. As a congressman, Sanford voted in favor of three of four articles of impeachment against President Bill Clinton, citing the need for "moral legitimacy."

^^^Nice!

Ach! I feel for the kids.

And for Mrs. Sanford. He messed up big time alright.

Hope they can work it out.

What a fucking moron, and he did it during Father's Day too. He's supposed to be one of the guys trying to turn the GOP around, LOL! What more can you do to give material to Olbermann and Maddow?!

It was nice of him to disappear with nobody being able to get in contact with him also. What if there was an emergency that required his attention in the state? Secretly sleeping with your mistress in Argentina doesn't seem like a very good excuse.

I love the part where he claims he's spent the last 5 days in Argentina "crying".:1orglaugh Yeah, between the episodes of farewell sex I imagine.

I couldn't careless about someone cheating as it's their own, personal failing. It's just when these hypocrites chastise others from their moral mountain top it's pretty interesting to see them tumble back down to the valley with the rest of us imperfect beings.

At least he was honest.

At least he was honest.

When? After his wife eventually asked him to get out of the house or after he got caught or after the lie that he was in Appalachia hiking??

I doubt he's being completely honest right now.

He should resign. That's bad judgement in many ways. If shit's getting to him to that level that he cheats on his wife, leaves his family on father's day, doesn't tell his staff where is and only comes back when he finds out it's big news...he needs to quit. The Lt. Governor was already blasting him before the affair news hit.

You would think the writer of the article could get the facts straight before releasing this. He was not AWOL, nor was he gone for 7 days. He was only gone for 5. And a few of his aides knew where he was, and how to get in contact with him, had there been an emergency.

I am not defending his actions one bit. I do think it is hypocritical of him. I hope he can work though this with his family, move past it, and continue leading this great state for the rest of his term.

I gather he was only known missing for 5 days. The article points out that he was on a 7 day trip to Venezuela.

Frankly, we don't know what his aids knew since there's evidence he lied all the way up until today.

He admits he mislead his staff!! His wife didn't even know (as SHE says) where he was. The douche even names his family damn near last as he's citing who he allegedly hurt. Talk about a self-absorbed clown....sheesh.

:sing: Don't Cry for me Argentina...
It won't be easy, you'll think it strange
When I try to explain how I feel
That I still need your love after all that I've done

You won't believe me
All you will see is a girl you once knew
Although she's dressed up to the nines
At sixes and sevens with you

I had to let it happen, I had to change
Couldn't stay all my life down at heel
Looking out of the window, staying out of the sun

So I chose freedom
Running around, trying everything new
But nothing impressed me at all
I never expected it to

[Chorus:]

Don't cry for me Argentina
The truth is I never left you
All through my wild days
My mad existence
I kept my promise
Don't keep your distance
:sing:

He left Columbia on Thursday last week, & returned yesterday, Tuesday. A couple of his aides have admitted they knew where he was, but refused to tell the media. He said his wife has known about the affair for about 5 months now, and they are working to put it behind them. Hopefully now that it is in the open, they can get through this and move on with their lives together as a family.

I'll have to defer to you as to when he left and came back...Small potatoes really in the scope of his hypocrisy IMO.

It's a troubling trend for the GOP for sure...we have barely let the dust settle from the John Ensign --Nevada--scandal of last week!

I'd love to just blame the GOP on being total sexually hypocritic clowns---Sanford was another Chest-thumping anti-Clinton Impeacher--but there is something to the whole "Power Corrupts" in Politics that crosses political parties, unfortunately...

I would have no problem if South Carolina Dems try to make him resign.

All this carrying on about right and wrong, you're all just jealous that he can afford an out of country mistress and the best we can manage is to use our left hand for sometrhing different.

They ran his '02 campaign commercial on Rachel Maddow show, this pegs hypocrisy meter.

When details first started coming out over the weekend, I figured it was drug or alcohol rehab.

The difference is the Demos don't hold themselves out and gin up their constituencies based on moral outrage at their opponents.

I don't think he's done anything that requires resignation...unless of course he's compromised his office or used public funds for this tryst....then maybe that's another story.

I think the state will be sifting through his records to see if he used tax payer money for tix on redeyes to Buenos Aires on Aerolineas Argentinas...

I also think he *technically* left the state of S.C. vulnerable and intentionally broke the chain of command/authority/succession with his little Father's Day Rumpy Pumpy trip...

He could be *forced* to resign, and it wouldn't be harsh...
