Van Halen Fans : David Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar ?

He looks like hell now, but when DLR left the band, I pretty much stopped listening to their stuff. 5150 was pretty good though. But Van Halen (with David Lee) was one of the first bands I saw live in concert. To this day, that was probably the best show I've ever seen - with AC/DC a close second. I really liked Van Halen and I remember being really angry about the whole "Van Hagar"/DLR thing. That anger probably kept me from enjoying the good stuff they did while Hagar was there. But still, DLR FTW.

Yea, loved their music with David Lee there. Saw him solo and but it bit the big one. Speaking of AC/DC, i was lucky enough to have seen them with the late BON SCOTT singing and when the band returned with BRIAN JOHNSON on vocals.

I heard the same thing about Diamond Dave's solo show from a huge fan, lol. I like DLR as a singer and showman but Hagar is much more accomplished as a musician and writer.

Seriously, check out Sammy Hagar's albums, "Standing Hampton", Three Lock Box", "Marching To Mars" and Chickenfoot's first 2 albums. You won't regret it.

The Bowie /Jagger cover of "Dancing in the Street" was lame too.

Yea, good assessment between the two for sure. Also, i'll have to check out the album's you mentioned......appreciate it !

There's a story out there somewhere about DLR post-VH when he was touring with his all-star lineup in the mid-late 80s. I think it was Steve Vai who recounts it...how they'd roll in to a town, and their managers would book the top two floors of the best hotel there. The top floor was for the tour. The floor below it was left empty as a barrier between the band and the other hotel guests.

He said he remembers often times walking around the hallways and there would be a few dozen naked women just strolling around, rooms set up with coke and booze. Just utter wildness.

Nothing like being a rock star and having groupies like that around ha. On the other hand, the fans paying to hear the music were left disappointed. No wonder the tickets were cheap for that show.

I saw VH at the tampa bay times forum last april and it was amazing. I like a few van hagar songs but you cannot compare the 2. the songs with DLR rocked and were about having fun and girls while Hagar songs were syrupy with song titles like "why cant this be love" or "how do I know when it's love" "can't stop loving you" "love walks in"

This is New VH with DLR and it's an acoustic version that just fucking ROCKS

They were both great with Van Halen, but if I want some hard rock then I'll go with Roth or if I want some great ballads or softer rock then Hagar is my selection. Now, If I had to chose one it'll be Hagar.

It's good to hear they can still rock and yes, I agree without a doubt that with David Lee Roth, the music was a more heavier sound. Hagar was more commercial with them at least with the airplay it received.

Van Halen working on new music.
Fans of the rockers should expect a new album in about 18 months.

Dec. 2 (UPI) -- Van Halen vocalist David Lee Roth delivered some good news for fans of the longtime rockers: New music is headed our way.
Roth, in an interview with SiriusXM's Jim Florentine, revealed a new album is likely about 18 months away.

"I was up at Edward [Van Halen]'s house, maybe three days ago, and we're starting to put music together," Roth said.

"We start way, way, way in advance, 'cause we are eminently art-centric, which is a really fancy way of saying we really do generate all the artwork, the graphics, etc," he explained. "Same thing with the merchandise: If you buy a t-shirt, that was designed, literally, in my living room."

Roth said the band, which also includes Wolfgang and Alex Van Halen, gets together about three times a week to practice new material.

"Oh, yeah, we're writing," he said "I write lyrics routinely. It's a perishable skill. And the band plays together routinely, at least three times a week. They’re up at Ed’s place, routinely."

Depends on the mood I'm in at the moment. Roth was more a party and rock band. Hagar on the other hand had the ballads and some light rock. I know solo wise I like Hagar more. With Van Halen I'd say both with a slight lean towards Van Hagar.

Yea, heavier with Roth and maybe a bit more commercial with Hagar.

I love Sammy Hagar and his music and his presence as a frontman more than DLR.

BUT...

Van Halen had their biggest hits with Roth, so I guess I have to say him. And, technically, he's a more talented singer (4-octave range is hard to compete with).

Yea, I just go back to the early years with Roth and they plain out rocked.
