Van Halen Fans : David Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar ?

If you are talking lead singer for Van Halen alone, then it's Diamond Dave. If you are talking career, Sammy was with Montrose, had done well solo, and did well with Van Halen.

Roth was way more charismatic, flamboyant than Hagar for sure. And for me, Van Halen was a bit heavier too. I remember so much more in the 80's when MTV were playing videos. I remember Montrose but not familiar with their music. Looks like Hagar is touring again with his band and Van Halen touring too this month.

The thing that pissed me off about when DLR was in the band was all the fucking 50s and 60s cover songs they did. That band was fantastic and DLR wanted them to doo-wap. Gimme Van Hagar. I kknow DLR was fantastic frontman and personified the VH image to a tee, but I don't want to be Dancin' In the Streets.
Funny thing is that I feel the same way about The Rolling Stones. How many fucking Motown songs did they really need to cover?!

^ Agreed. While the first 4 Van Halen albums were fantastic, they started declining with the release of the aptly titled "Diver Down" with those embarrassing covers of "(Oh) Pretty Woman" and "Dancing in the Street". Sammy Hagar helped keep Van Halen somewhat viable during the years of the brothers' alcohol induced stupors. Sammy's solo work and his current band, Chickenfoot (with former Van Halen bassist, Michael Anthony) is far superior to anything David Lee Roth did after he left Van Halen. :2 cents:

Anyone who says anything other than DLR is not a real VH fan.

That's pretty much why I chose Sammy. More of a Sammy fan than a Van Halen fan and always have been. In 2013 Chickenfoot blows the doors off Van Halen anyway. Rather watch/hear Joe Satriani than Eddie Van Halen now too. Michael Anthony is where he belongs also.

I prefer the first era, but I think that has a lot more to do with timing than anything else.

I also think there was a stretch there where Van Halen started to take themselves a little too seriously, and it showed. There's a fundamental fact which I think Eddie forgot - probably lost in a drunken haze - which Dave never did:

Van Halen was never meant to be taken too seriously.

I also think it's funny that when Dave first left the band that he was the bad guy, at least in the public's opinion.

Time has told us otherwise, just ask Michael Anthony.

Roth could NEVER even attempt Gillan, like Sammy Did and did well:

He might turn Highway Star into a commercial jingle for Pep Boys.

Nobody can fix my car
I've raced it to the gro'ound
Nobody's been able to fix my car
It's not gonna brake the speed of so'ound
Oooh it's a repairin' machine
It needs everything
Like a tow truck driver with big fat tyres
And everything...
