Universal directions

So I have way too much time on my hand, but I'm watching the Universe and wondering this. When do you think they'll designate an up/down in the universe. Currently scientists have not technically designated one. Is it entirely possible since everything in space is continually moving?

Now I just wish I had some hash brownies to really trip my mind out?

The show is great, and thinking about this makes my head hurt. I have no answer.

my head hurts from just thinking about that. I love the show but after I watch it, not only do i feel small and insignifant but I have a massive headache

There is no up or down due to the fact that space is seemingly infinite and it is this way in all directions. So I suppose unless they find a point of reference in which to base the current direction the Earth and all the other celestial bodies are pointing then there never will be a designation of "up", "down", "left" and "right" because in space it's all the same thing.

If you were floating in space with no major points of reference or you had your eyes closed for whatever reason, you would not be able to tell which direction you were positioned because there is no gravity forcing you to a particular surface which would give you the necessary information to work it out. So space has no direction. Of course during space travel direction needs to be accounted for but this is just to get from one point to another and from our seemingly fixed position here on Earth we can make those sorts of decisions.

That's exactly my point though. Won't we have to eventually come up with a point of reference eventually because we will after all be traveling through space. Provided we don't blow ourselves up or destroy our own planet before we can figure out lengthy space travel. Wouldn't just be easier to set a reference point now to help further our understanding of it?

Here's my other question. If the universe is infinitely exanding, what's it expanding into?

Our north could be the universe's southeast.

Well I do realize that, but can't we establish some fixed coordinates in space to start with? Like coordinate a point between Mars, Earth and the Sun or somehting and use that as our point of reference?
