Obama should have attended because he is the Commander in Chief of one of his Generals was killed in battle.

Maybe? It depends on what the family wanted, private vs public ceremony. Service to remember the man, or full blown military honors. Compare Nixon's realitivly simple funeral to Reagan's all the bells and whistles. Even if the family wanted a simple service the president shouldn't have been out playing golf during the funeral. That was tacky at best.
