Tracking browser history

Can anyone suggest some software that logs browser history? I need something "free" and portable (ability to install from a thumb drive), or maybe some suggestion about an alternate way as the browser history within the browser itself keeps getting wiped.

Take a screenshot, why in the fuck would anyone want to save browsing history?

Does it need to be installed from a thumb drive because you are attempting to get the browser history of an individual without their knowledge or consent for the purpose of blackmail?

As far as I know, browser histories within the browser itself do not get wiped out by default. There is usually a setting the the user HAS to set as a choice preference to have the history be wiped out upon exiting / shutting down the browser.

For example, I use Maxthon MX5 and it has an "Auto clear on exit" box in the Clear Data setting that IF I were to check it ... then yes, every time that I exited the browser, all my history would be wiped out. I do not have that box checked, so my history doesn't get wiped out until I manually choose to wipe it out.

Mr. Daystar

In a bell tower, watching you through cross hairs.
All I heard as I read this, was the theme song from Mission Impossible.....

Even the layman knows in order to save browsing history you put one thumb in your asshole and the other in your mouth. Rotate thumbs ever 5 seconds it it will be saved. Hope this helps ;)

Portable software is preferred.

I'm trying to catch an employee who is misusing a company computer and they are wiping the history each day.

Wiping the history won't get rid of all traces.

Have you thought of checking the temporary internet folder for those damned annoying cookies and other bits and pieces that are always lurking about, unless you take a long time and put effort into clearing everything.

Yes, but I'm not sure what to look for. Is there some file that would have a log of sites visited along with time and date?

Sort the folder by date and see what pops up, site banners, graphics, cookies or anything else recognizable. There's occasionally the odd downloaded file lurking in there too.

Are you the boss? If so, as a start ... forbid any fucking around with the history by employees.

At one place where I worked, we were made to sign an agreement understanding that we were not to fuck around with our computers whatsoever. We were not to install ANY software of ours into the computers no matter how small. E-mail was not for personal use. Etc. Failure to comply was grounds for dismissal.

Yes, I am the boss and yes, I made everyone sign a form about misusing the computers being grounds for dismissal, but some people just don't have any real work ethic.

I can't fire someone unless I have actual proof, so this is my dilemma.

If this employee "isn't working" - then it is costing your company thousands in lost productivity. Get a spare computer, and have an IT person / consultant set it up so that either the browser history can't be cleared, and/or install a program that takes a screen-shot every :10 or so, and saves them. Then have IT say they were doing an update, and they noticed this employee's PC wouldn't process it. Swap PCs using that excuse, after having the employee download their data to a LAN drive for use on the new PC.

Take the cheap way. Unknown to the employee(s) plug your computers into a light timer ($15.99) and have it set to cut power to the PC 15min before the end of shift. They won't be able to turn it back on let alone erase history.
