'Tom Sawyer' becomes politically corrected

Ridiculous idea. A book is a record of the times in which it was written. We may find certain words or ideas unacceptable now but that doesn't mean we can rewrite history. It does the book a disservice as a document of the mores of its time.

Agreed. Some people think that by changing books you can change history to fit their "ideal" world... they are wrong. History is history, it happened, and that's that. If people can't accept that very simple premise, they should think about changing themselves, not a book. :2 cents:

Exactly. Why doesn't the old testament get rewritten? A lot of slavery, genocide and daughter-selling going on!

Maybe we should sit together and get it right? I got a lot of free time!

They should change it and it will save history from repeating the same mistakes. What if the book had the words cunts, whores, sluts, hoes, bitch, and twats? You wouldn't want young kids reading that right? So then change it.

Gotta love the double standard. Cracker? Okay. Troglodyte? Okay. White devil? Okay. And people wonder why there is so much racial tension in this country.

i think there is more today than ever before.
i think people need to realize that and ask why.

i believe most of it comes from the wall of crap thrown at people since around the late 80's by the news media, the public schools, the colleges, and the entertainment media.

even this tom sawyer thing. why now?
i bet most blacks didnt even know about it and most who did don't care.
and what would be so diffiicult about a professional, supposedly well educated teacher to explain why twain used the word in the book.
i think this is just another example of trying to make blacks more angry and whites more guilty feeling and scared.

why do these groups seem to promote racial problems, tensions?
how does that benefit them?
thats my big question, wish i knew.

It is completely different. Those words are of course insults but do not have the same connotations as the n word. Have you honestly been offended by someone calling you a white devil?!?

who are you to say whats offensive and to whom?

and actually the word ****** in that place and time wasnt meant as an insult.
it was a common word for black people just as gringo is still a common word for americans in all countries south of it.

it wasnt meant to offend.
blacks called whites crackers and other terms and whites called blacks ******s and other terms.
they also called each other white and black.

what scott said is completely true.
why would one racial term get a pass and the other get so much attention?
that fact alone and the reasons for it is where the real racism is the issue.
