This...is a true American!

That's what I would have done also. Not only because it's the right thing to do, but because with my luck if something like that ever happened to me and I took advantage of it, it would probably result in some horrible event later on. :1orglaugh

The bloke did the right thing and didn't even want a reward. He is a decent person. There should be more people like him the world.

Very admirable....not sure I would have done the same thing to be ******** honest.

honestly dunno what I would have done in that situation. I would have thought about keeping it but probably in the end I'da done the same and returned it to the rightful owner. I would hope someone would do that for me if the shoe was on the other foot

An admirable and honest man. I would do the same, I think - there is nothing more precious for a man than honour and good name (sorry, I don't want to moralise, but this gesture is an excellent example how to act in the best way).

hehe, he was in the 69th infantry  okay, I guess only I found that funny. On a more serious note, if the world had more guys like that, especially in positions of power, it would be a much better place.

I'd like to believe that I'd do as he did, but I find it impossible to imagine the extent of my temptation should I find myself in a similar scenario. I'm not the keenest altruist the world has ever seen.

Given that $2,500 is no fortune, I'd have probably done the right thing. However if it was millions, it's a totally different proposition...

That said I really admire that guy for doing the right thing. Finally an American doing the right the thing? Haha j/k

I definitely would not put myself in the category of an angel, or someone who's that good. I just think when it comes to money, it's better to earn your own.

I'm not criticizing anyone, I'm just explaining that this shows he is a thoughtful and moral person; not that he is American. The two are unrelated ;)

Methinks the intent of the original poster was to show that the two are related and that this act of kindness is indicative of a true American rather than those people who live in this country looking for a free ride. A true American is thoughtful and moral... anyone else is French.:D

And to all of those who think they may keep the ticket for themselves... you would be screwed because the lady who lost it had already signed it and the lottery people will compare your signatures. I think many missed that little detail in the article.

Is it just me or...

Why do they have to say it's a soldier, does it make the news any more (or less) valuable? Especially with the last quote' "Boniberger, of the 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry, was stationed in Baghdad and returned to the United States in September 2005"

Otherwise: Good job, glad to see some honoust people left in this world! If I had a good day I would probably did the same thing..

I think the reason why it has become such a story is the fact that he's a soldier. The war in Iraq has hardly helped improve the profile of the military, and little things like this just help to keep the public's impression of them positive. People will make a causal connection between the fact this man has excellent morals and the fact he's in the military. Or at least that's what they want.

But then again I am a cynical bastard.

You're not cynical... you're exactly right. People find money, wallets, property, etc all the time and either turn it into the police or return it to their rightful owner... this made it into the media because it was a winning lottery ticket with a decent sized pot, the winner was an elderly lady and the good samaritan was a soldier who served in Iraq. Now if it were 50 bucks dropped by a thug and returned by a mailman, we never would have heard about it.
