i wasn't exactly certain how long he was on that roof but if he was without food and water for days his thinking wouldn't have been all that clear and during the episode he seems downright delusional...which could lead to the choice to saw through the wrist

I agree, he was looking out of it. Plus he saw the zombies pushing against the door. I think I might saw my own hand off instead of being eaten alive.

you can see the city from the camp and downtown atlanta aint that big.
of course they drove directly there because all the Stucky's on I-95 were closed.
so he was up there for a few hours.

I'd like to see the wife beater's wife get chewed up and turn into a zombie. He blubbers like a little baby because he lost his "love" in life. She only comes to chew him up and he screams and cries like a baby because he knows he will turn into one of them and they let him. Or they let him live with that until he turns and then shoot him when he has no memory of anything but to feed.

too bad they didnt make more episodes, the whole thing is only 2 1/2 hours, but it was good.

He was handcuffed to the roof for more than a few hours.
Day one: we are introduced to him, handcuffed on the roof. The others run, leaving him. They return to camp.
Night: Lori and Rick get it on while there is a thunderstorm, Shane sits guard on the trailer, eying the tent.
Day two: They go back to rescue Merle.
This is as far as we know.
Merle was not a sane guy in the first place, as is obvious. And, he was under unique circumstances: the combination of the heat, lack of food and water (even if for a few hours), direct sunlight, a thunderstorm, and the biggie in dead people who only want to eat him. This would, of course, eventually cause massive panic. In his mind, he had no choice.
And, he could have been picked off the roof top by the helicopter.

Sounds like the "rusty saw" theory was the winner...as was they "he took another route off the roof"...to which none of us guessed.
Bloody hell, this was a brutal episode. And I don't mean brutally bad. The last few minutes were bloody intense. Looks like Merle got his revenge.
