While I can accept that a total of 2,000 dollars might have been the intention for some, (some people did start advocating for that amount before the 600 dollars even passed to be fair to at least some of them.) they should have been extremely clear about that from the beginning to avoid a dumb situation like this. Any moderately savvy person should easily have seen this coming. I have a feeling some democrats even purposely left it vague in the hopes of reeling in more votes, and can now use the ambiguity as an excuse to give less.
Really if it was up to me I would just aim high and get everybody another $2,000. It helps out people that need it more, and really it isn't like the Republicans are going to fight it any less if it's only 1,600 instead of 2,000 dollars. Plus if you start high you might leave room for negotiation if there really is no other choice. That's harder to do if you start low.
