The Best Drummers of All Time

When I think about good percussionists, I think about someone who is not only technically skilled, but is also very creative in his/her composition.

That's why my pick would have to be Danny Carey of Tool. When you've got polyrythms going on in such crazy, off the wall jazz-like time signatures like how Mr. Carey plays, you've got a fucking amazing drummer. And the man is fast.

Who's your pick? If you were putting together a dream band, who would you want on the skins?

My personal choice: Neil Peart but there are a good number of really great drummers.

I agree wholeheartedly as likely mentioned in previous thread, Peart is extremely accomplished in the art of percussion, heck, he might rank up top as one of the best lyricists as well. Peart, Lee & Lifeson are obviously no "Fly By Nighters" :D either, how many years have they been going strong ?

OK, so Mr. Lee's voice takes some getting used to . .
it's softened quite a bit over the years.

As the thread author mentioned, Danny Carey is a very unique talent as well, although I think that all along he should have had a more prominent role than that of which he has been exposed to. Playing in a band with an extra flamboyant frontman like you know who ;) he didn't get his just due exposure, IMNSHO :2 cents: :D

Neil's the Rush lyricist as well. Pretty talented guy.

My two favorites of all time are:
Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater) and Neil Peart(Rush)

Not that percussionists actually seek attention toward themselves, from what I've seen they sorta like their "cover" so to speak. Even so, the percussionist(s) should have more heralded than they have been over the years.

And with that I'll add Artimus Pyle to my selection, if you can find him in all of his obscurity. :D

That's one of these questions that can hardly be answered. All those different styles, approaches and schools... how can you objectively decide who belongs to the best drummers of all time?

There are drummers like Phil Collins or Dave Grohl, that can write great songs and play like clockwork. But are they as fast and technically skilled as say a Flo Mounier? Hardly. On the other hand, Flo Mounier despite all his speed and technical ability just can't write a descent song or play for half an hour straight without making a mistake.

I'm a little bit surprised noone named Simon Phillips and Virgil Donati (Take a look) yet.

Same answer. The man is a fucking wizard.

We're not signing any laws here, man. Just site your pick.

Ehm....that was my way of saying that it would be too hard for me to pick someone. I feel like who is the best is not for me to say.
I have played instruments myself (not the drums though) and also played in different bands, so I know the different processes behind learning instruments, writing songs, playing as a unit, etc. All things that define a musician. It's like with intelligence. Some people have outstanding knowledge and can retain every fact but are really bad at making rational and sustainable decisions, some have incredible mathematical and dimensional intelligence but very poor emotional intelligence, some have superior communication and empathy but can't even solve a physics equation. Know where I'm getting at. ;)

There are a lot of drummers I deeply respect for different reasons: Virgil Donati, Danny Carey, Derrek Roddy, Tony Royster, and so on.

Aaaahhh another endless debate ill throw in Bill Bruford of Yes and King Crimson,Terry Bozzio from Frank Zappa and so much more ,Carl Palmer from Emerson Lake and Palmer and Asia,Alan White from Yes and last but not least Dennis Chambers whos played with way too many to list oh yeah theres also Aynsley Dunbar
