The Best Drummers of All Time

The secret ingredient? MY BALLS
Mike Portnoy is absolutely ridiculous. Travis Barker is also an amazing drummer, but if you listen to the songs he plays on, a lot of his drum patterns are extremely similar and sound very close to one another. Mike Portnoy, on the other hand, is just fucking awesome.

dont know his name but the drummer from iron maiden rocks
eric carr (kiss) was underrated too--died way too young

Nicko McBrain (sp?) and Eric Carr

Say what you want about the guy, but I still think Tommy Lee can go w/ the best of em! :2 cents:

As you can tell by my username... Neil Peart is my favorite! Mike Portnoy, Carter Beauford, Alex Van Halen, Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, and Animal are some of my others! Ohhh... Kenny John... he played for Glen Miller now and then!

Carl Allen is someone I like to hear playing solos, because you can always hear that he is doing something more than just crash and bang.

Wow. Can't believe no one has mentioned Keith Moon yet.

Guess I'll toss his name in the hat myself. :D

Charlie Benante of Anthrax/S.O.D is sick also!

Jaimoe and Butch Trucks put together some real intricate work in the Allman Brothers. Blending blues, jazz, country and rock. Brilliant.:thumbsup:

That's one of these questions that can hardly be answered. All those different styles, approaches and schools... how can you objectively decide who belongs to the best drummers of all time?

There are drummers like Phil Collins or Dave Grohl, that can write great songs and play like clockwork. But are they as fast and technically skilled as say a Flo Mounier? Hardly. On the other hand, Flo Mounier despite all his speed and technical ability just can't write a descent song or play for half an hour straight without making a mistake.

I'm a little bit surprised noone named Simon Phillips and Virgil Donati (Take a look) yet.

Agreed here. "Best" is something that's determined by each person, I think, unless you have some pretty black and white criteria. It's usually a question of the listener's tastes.
