The 13 Most Gruesome Album Covers

We're continuing our week of Halloween programming with a look at the 13 most gruesome album covers of all time.

Let's be real: When I was doing research for this list, I came across some really sick album covers. So sick they made a Cannibal Corpse album look like something you'd frame and give to your parents to hang over their mantle at Christmas.

I don't know how the Poison album didn't win.

That one is truly terrifying.

But on a more...serious...note, any of iron maidens albums featuring eddie on the front would have fitted right in there.

As a man that's grown jaded to gore, the only terrifying one is that poison album cover. I'll surely have nightmares now.

Warning, the last photo: the cover of Mayhem - Dawn of the Black Hearts is real. I recall first hearing about this years ago when Howard Stern discussed it.

At some point in 1990, the members of Mayhem moved to "an old house in the forest" near Oslo. They began writing songs for their next album, De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas. On 8 April 1991, Dead (vocalist) committed suicide in the house owned by the band. He was found by Euronymous (guitarist/vocalist) with slit wrists and a shotgun round to the head. Dead's suicide note notably read "Excuse all the blood, cheers." and included an apology for firing the weapon indoors. Instead of calling the police, Euronymous went to a nearby store and bought a disposable camera to photograph the corpse, after re-arranging some items. One of these photographs was later stolen and used as the cover of a bootleg live album entitled Dawn of the Black Hearts.
