Television programming made for teens is bullshit!!!

Pathetic. Why does tv have to always teach life lessons? Thank god British TV doesn't work on that basis. If you think the MTV version of Skins is bad watch the UK original, rather than the watered down yank version being shown on a channel that bizarrely has moved far away from its remit. There is a totally condescending attitude towards the young, in that they can't tell the difference between reality & fiction & want to ape the apparently bad behaviour they see on the tellybox. Oh but of course this argument means that we can just blame the media for the ills of the young generation.
PS - Skins is rubbish, if you want a real reflection of what it's like being a teenager watch The Inbetweeners.

TV doesn't HAVE to teach life lessons, but the reps for these shows here pitch it like it's supposed to. And does this mean that the Degrassi promo should be running in the morning... a time where children of all ages can see it??? Not even HBO runs promos like that in the morning. I'm not blaming the media for all bad situations that teens get into, but they are certainly part of the problem. The fact that I have to explain these situations seen on tv, not in real life, tells me that the young can't tell the difference all the time.

...and my sister is not stupid by any means.

Who are you explaining these situations to?
& the problem is bad parenting, using the telly as a babysitter without contextualising what their kids are watching.

Allow me to be the first American to officially apologize for the absolute trainwreck that is "Skins US".

As a Canadian let me be the first to apologize for Skins US.

After all, it was filmed here with Canadian actors.

Skins UK is by far much better.

My sister is who I'm explaining this to. She is in middle school. Her upbringing is in no way bad, and is very aware of most realities. I, and her parents keep her very well.

tell me about it. the shit they have on mtv is just disgusting pointless brainwashing garbage. i could never fully describe my hatred for their "programming"

Then don't watch it. Some of these shows are broadcast on cable late at night around 9 or 10 and they warn you at the beginning of the show that it might contain graphic nature or whatnot by giving the show's TV rating.

Just watched it and it was crap. The acting, the plot and just generally boring and unrealistic. The ep concentrated on bullying and some girls were bullying a new student that dressed as a boy and wore no make up and they managed to persuade her to try on womens clothes and makeup and she did with hardly any resistance so she didn't care much about her 'boyish' look, oh and she was being raised by 2 gay dads. Then when the bullying started she ran off and started angrily messing about with a gun and i was thinking she'll go crazy Carrie style but she just shoves the gun in a letterbox for no apparent reason then in the end goes swimming with one of her 'bullies'. What a fucking waste of an hour of my life, for something on at 10pm and so hyped up there should've been sex, profanities and violence with at least one person killed, murdered brutally preferably.

You guys sound like a bunch of old geezers:1orglaugh

well let me tell you something here you young whipper snapper.
just listen and You Might learn somethin.
when i was your age mtv played music videos with hot teachers dancing on desks , hot students standing too close.to the teacher and cross dressers singing about their chameleons , none of this rigamarole you got today dag nabit.

i havent watched tv in 2 years or more, but the shit theyre selling today especially to the youth is flat out dangerous and counterproductive.
adults with children should simply call their cable provider and cancel or block etv and mtv and any other similar channel if they actually care about their children.

thats not being old geezer like, thats being a responsible parent .
now hit the bricks, skidaddle you you whippersnapper you.

What show are you on about?

So from that one example you conclude that the young (all of them!) can't tell the difference all the time.

I think you misread my post. I said that they cannot tell the difference sometimes. Again, these shows are promoted to help teens relate and deal with everyday situations. Situations that are far from everyday and certainly do more to promote creating them, IMO.

I think what people fail to realize is that it's tv. It's supposed to be entertaining, not a depiction of reality. It's where imaginations are allowed to roam free so people can be taken on a journey. If they did it as realistic as real life, it would be incredibly boring tv. Of course there's alot of totaly unrealistic situations, but it creates the drama that drives the show. People want to watch other peoples drama, not just some hunky doory program.

So don't complain about realism in a fiction show. Complain about realism in a documentary or something.

There is no need to devote a TV channel to nothing but music videos anymore. It isn't 1995 anymore it's 2011, ever hear of something called the Internet? Why devote a whole channel to music videos when you can go on Youtube and find any single music video in the click of a mouse. :dunno:

I'd recommend Freaks and Geeks. It was definitely a standout.
