Given the recent heat toward MTV's Skins, I have to say that primarily ALL teen drama shows are complete BULLSHIT!!! It sucks that shows like Degrassi, Skins, Teen Mom, etc... glorify the justification of the bad decisions and very adult situations that teens get into as much as they feel they are doing a service in prevention. In a single teaser clip of Degrassi, there was alchohol-induced lesbianism, a borderline violent stalker boyfriend, teen runaway, and a possible suicide. And then we Skins, which makes whore-like behavior amongst teen look really intriguing until the very end and its emotional consequences.

Now I have a younger teen sister, who asked me about the legitimacy of said shows because she likes them. I'm constantly having to explain that she should never justify this behavior in her own mind. Do not get to the point where you put yourself in these situations, and if they find you, take a step away from it and do your best to consider the long-term problems the decision can cause.

Also, I went to and graduated from a Chicago Public High School not that long ago, and I honestly never even came across 75% of the bullshit these shows endorse. Yeah, there was teen pregnancy and violence among guys, but that was about it. Nobody killed themselves, there were gays, but nobody gave a fuck. Does anybody here see this shit?????

There was a study done back in the '60s where the conclusion about TV was it is a barren wasteland.

I can imagine what it would be considered now.

Best you can do is let the kids/teens know TV is crap, try to enforce some morals and values in them, and let them know the consequences are nowhere near as romantic as some crap show on MTV portrays it as.

No, specifically programming made for teens. Don't get me wrong, adult-oriented programming is shit as well, but the teen drama genre is supposed to deal with real life situations in hopes that teen learn lessons from the depictions. Instead, reality shows like Teen Mom make C-list celebs out these girls. It honestly is worse that the grown up stuff.

At least adults are able to decipher what is absolute bullshit and was isn't. Middle school teens look at programming set in HS and think that's what they're in for... that is what is gonna happen when they get there. Then when they do, the fabricated bullshit leaves them LESS equipped to handle the realities of life. If teen girls can't handle bullies in real life, then come home to see emo, lonely, delusional, borderline violent/suicidal teens on TV struggle with the same thing, why are we expecting them to be okay in the long run? If these situations were presented in an adult working evironment for a pilot to NBC, they'd laugh you out of hollywood. Since in set in HS, its ground-breaking and necessary, right?

There is one show I see on The Soup a lot called Secret Life of the American Teen or something like that.

Talk about pure idiocy.

Pathetic. Why does tv have to always teach life lessons? Thank god British TV doesn't work on that basis. If you think the MTV version of Skins is bad watch the UK original, rather than the watered down yank version being shown on a channel that bizarrely has moved far away from its remit. There is a totally condescending attitude towards the young, in that they can't tell the difference between reality & fiction & want to ape the apparently bad behaviour they see on the tellybox. Oh but of course this argument means that we can just blame the media for the ills of the young generation.
PS - Skins is rubbish, if you want a real reflection of what it's like being a teenager watch The Inbetweeners.
