Surviving Eddie Van Halen: by Sammy hagar

Eddie did some pretty incredible stuff with the way electric guitar sounded—
like he'd do an album with a different sound for each song,
really innovating stuff for the time.

And David Lee was truly great in his moment.

I never was into Sammie Hagars voice or performances on the whole.

Whereas Diamond Dave was one of the best frontmen back in the days... not as a singer, more as a total package. I am not so sure Van Halen would really have taken off if it wasn't for him.

I grew up with VH and I never understood everyone elses fascination with them. A couple of good songs and a few good riffs and that was it. Looking back now I'd have to say that the number of VH songs (both eras) that I don't like outnumber the ones I do by a handy margin.

me too.
but i would classify the first 3 albums as really good, the next 2 as fair but as soon as i heard Jump from/in 1984 I knew it was over.

I was very impressed when I learned that it was Diamond Dave who suggested they call the band Van Halen.

You'd think with his ego he'd want the band to be called The David Lee Roth Band.

Remember the Joe Piscopo parody of Diamond Dave? "What Hath God Roth?" I think it was called. Pretty funny SNL stuff. Almost as good as John Belushi's impression of Joe Cocker.

Weeelllll, in his case I wouldn't be surprised if the ego came after the success.

Likely that is was greatly exacerbated by the success but I'd venture to guess that you'd have to be reasonably ego-driven to be capable of being the front man for a major rock group in the first place. Isn't that pretty much what the job is all about in the first place...."hey, look at me!!!"??

I honestly have no idea what DLR may have been like before the first album or two. I just remember when he (briefly) had his radio show, people said he came across as reasonably down-to-earth and knowledgable. So, that leads me to think that he wasn't always the douche that he sometimes came off as (and pretty much had to be...it was his job).

And, with or without ropes, anyone who gets into rock climbling the way he did can't be all bad.

Eddie Van Halen has always been a very talented guitarist. The problem is, like most talented people, he is also a perfectionist. That's where the problem starts. He's not and he expects everyone around him to be perfect as well. That's why he's a cross addicted alcoholic. He can't get along with his wife Valerie. Are they finally now separated? Nor can he get along with any of his ex-bandmates, Michael Anthony, David Lee Roth and now apparently Sammy Hagar. He needs check himself into a detox and rehab center. But that can only work for so long. What he needs to do is change his attitudes and thinking towards his fellow musicians, especially those of whom he plans to work with in the future. As the only ones who will get along with him are his brother Alex and his son Wolfgang wholeheartedly.

I don't remember anything Joe Piscopo did. But that Belushi impression is classic.

You know he did a duet with the man Joe Cocker himself, right?

Of course I do. "Feelin' Alright" was the tune as I recall. Can't find it on youtube for some bizarre reason but it should be there somewhere. If you don't remember Joe Piscopo then I am way too old.....which I am anyway so what the fuck?? :dunno: :D

Moving to a trailer in Fife, AL.
Been listening to "diver down" and "Fair Warning" lately. Despite the cover tunes on DD, love both albums. Loved both DLR and SH. different vibes ot the bands, different maturity levels.

Hate to think my favorite guitarist is now gone guano-brained

My favorite part about the excerpt was when their manager and the whole band tried to do an intervention, and "Eddie smashed a wine bottle at the intervention. 'I left my family for this,' he said. 'You think I'm going to do it for you guys?'" That's gangster ass rock star shit right there.

Let's get this straight: you think it's way cool that Eddie van Halen is killing himself and ruining his talent with drug and alcohol abuse. You think it's something to be admired and even emulated.

Wow, just wow.:surprise:

I forgot to add that Van Halen, like so many other rock bands of the time, seemed to go on a downhill slide ever since they started to infuse their music with the ever commercial sounding keyboards.

So outlandish, my eyes are bleeding.

He never said it was way cool. Nor did he say he thinks it's something to be admired and even emulated.

I guess that Eddie was ''getting some help'' at the time when Van Halen the band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

:dunno:

All in all, I can't criticize anybody who has once and/or continues to over indulge into the evils of excess drug and alcohol abuse . . . it just wouldn't be right!

I found it amusing, sad, and basically just a total sort of rock and roll cliche. When Sammy talked about him just firing every tech, sound, and roadie in that piece I lost some respect for him - more than the whole substance abuse thing. That's his thing. He's just really bout it when it comes to the one thing in this world that really takes precedent over everything else: alki.
