The Texans name is a rebirth of the name of the original AFL team from Texas (was located in Dallas, however) that was owned by Lamar Hunt and later moved to Kansas City and became the Chiefs. The name is meant to pay homage to the fact that Texas, unlike the other 49 states, was actually once its own nation (you may have heard of that Alamo thing), hence the reference.
I agree however....from a national or world perspective, "Texans" is pretty lame. They sure looked good last night against the Saints though! Their "battle-red" uniforms are the best looking ones in the NFL as far as I am concerned.
Oh....their mascot is a bull (Toro). The cowboy idea was already taken by some other team whose name I can't recall right now.
