Stupid sports teams nicknames

redskins I think pays homage to the indians I don't see why people think its a mockery or racist?? I don't understand that?

Many teams have Indian types names, some they find offensive some they don't.But Redskins is one most do find offensive,as they feel it refers to a time that cash bountys were paid for the skin.

For some reason it really bothers me when a new franchise in sports gives their team a really dumb ass nickname, and there are older teams that have pretty stupid names as well. Here are some of the ones that I despise.

Washington Nationals-You mean to tell me that no one could come up with anything more original than that?Jeez, that's something that a 3rd grader could have come up with.

Houston Texans-see above rant.

Columbus Blue Jackets-I'm so glad I don't live in that city and have to root for a team with a lame ass name like that. And what is a Blue Jacket anyway? Is it an old type of civil war soldier or is it an insect?Seem like management wants to keep everyone outside of Ohio, who doesn't know the history, guessing about that one.

I could go on especially with college teams, but why bother.

And out of all of the professional teams here in the U.S.,how come no one has thought of using the Rhino?Seems like a fierce enough animal to warrant a team name.

what's wrong with nationals? the people of DC actually voted on that name. what would you call them?

What the fuck is a Nittany Lion ? of (Penn State)

"Nittany" is a geographical reference:

Pennsylvania State University's main University Park campus lies at the southern end of the Nittany and Penn's Valleys, and this area is also known as "Happy Valley".

vols not sure, maybe its in reference to the soldiers who volunteered to fight in the civil war??? best guess!

Pretty close, but based on an earlier war. The state of Tennessee provided a substantial number of volunteers for the war of 1812.

Washington had a team years ago called the senators,I think they should have re-used that if they could have.I watch games and they call them the 'Nats" for short, like the bug lol.

Anything but The Nationals. What's their mascot?A a flag?

Just seems very unimaginative to me,and in case you didn't know, people, for the most part are stupid.I'm sure that the same people that voted for that name go home and watch American Idol and Dancing With The Stars.Just because the people voted for it doesn't necessarily make it good.

I haven't given it much thought about what I would name the team because I still think that there shouldn't even be a team in Washington.Too bad the people of Montreal really didn't give a shit about baseball after their team started to really suck up the joint after the strike year.

(changed to "Wizards" in 1987)
Uh, that would be 1997. ;)
√ The Wash. "Redskins" OMG !!!! I'm sorry . . . was that racist ? :dunno: Jeesh ! I certainly hope that I didn't offend anybody here.

R-e-d-s-k-i-n s . . . How do they get away with it ?

:dunno: I refer to them as the F-o-r-e-s-k-i-n-s... :D

glad to see those with more sports history knowledge giving clarifications and reasons why some teams have the particular names they do - like 76ers, 49ers, the Jazz, etc ... there's usually some history and some reason behind a teams name - but the great thing is - not always - sometimes it seems like they just throw names in a hat and just go with whatever name they pull...and i think some people have already touched on the completely random and off the wall teams - as for my faves...

i agree with will ferrell when he said his all time favorite teamname was the 'anaheim amigos' from the old ABA days...

now that shit is just hilarious considering there's like 6 hispanic people who live in anaheim california--

since we're talking about anaheim i've got to mention 'the mighty ducks' - i don;t think any sports team has had the ignoble honor of being named after a teeny bopper disney movie...oh but wait...now they're just 'the ducks.'

the most brutally ironic name ever used has to be THE WASHINGTON BULLETTS - so funny, even the clash wrote a song called 'washington bulletts,' talking about washington's funding and training of rebel groups in nicaragua - after many years the owners finally decided 'WASHINGTON BULLETS' wasn't so PC.

I'd say ALL of the arena footbal league teams have pretty shitty names even though i don;t know all of them - all i know is L.A. has 'THE AVENGERS' ????

and has anyone explained the 'CINCINATTI REDS' ?

WASN'T 'RED'S' SUPPOSED to be some communist reference or something?
what was 'a red' way back when?

and last but not least there was my very own college alma mater of whittier college - our team name? "THE POETS."

yes indeed, "redskin" is the most racist of all sports team names - indian american author ward churchill wrote a great article on this whole issue "lets spread the 'fun' around" ; in it he asks the reader to imagine if there were teams called 'the sambos,' 'the spics,' or 'the gooks,' - but the reason why there aren't such teams, why redskin continues to be accepted, and why only Indians must suffer team-name mockery is simply because, "Indians are (falsely) percieved as being too few, and therefore too weak to defend themselves against racist and otherwise offensive behavior."

some people have noted that stanford's "cardinal" is a shitty name - but i don;t think anyone has mentioned that they changed it from 'stanford indians.'

and also, according to churchill, there are some newspapers out there in america, such as 'the portland post' - which refuse to print the word 'redskins,' and so refer to them by 'the washington team.'

i don;t mind a team being called "indians" - becuase in a way it is a reminder of americas past and the people who lived on the land where these major cities and teams are now located - and in some ways this is the ONLY way in which the american indian recieves any recognition...but "redskin" is just too close to the actual reality of skin color and the differences and problems that come with it...why not 'blackskins,' or 'yellowskins' ?

churchill's message in most of his writings is to show how american indians have been, and continue to be, the most victimized ethnic group in the united states.

Montreal Expos was pretty bad....they could have picked a good name when they moved the team to Washington....but they failed

• What the fuck is a Nittany Lion ? of (Penn State)

Since you're not from Pennsylvania I'll help you out. Around where Penn State main campus is, there's a mountain called Mt. Nittany, where mountain lions once roamed. Since Penn State is right by the mountain, the obvious choice was to name the mascot and team name the Nittany Lions.

Why on earth would anyone want to name their team after a negative event(I'm assuming) In their cities history? Like the MLS team here in Chicago, the Fire. They name the team after the event of the city burning completely down because of a cow kicking over a lantern. That's smart.

The cow was framed! ;-)
Don't know why teams are named after disasters, but they are. San Jose has Earthquakes twice. Although San Jose has n't had the quake damage as bad as SF or Oakland.

Could it be that they didn't mean the actual Chicago Fire? Could it be that they meant to name the team after something that burns through things, just like the team could burn though other teams?

Always with the negative waves Zell, always with the negative waves!

Then they should have called the team the Burn instead of the Fire, plus the logo is that of a fire department shield so I think that it's kinda clear on their intentions.

*scroll down to the section Club Logos and Colors, there is a perfect explanation*

Not being negative, just telling it like it is(of at least trying to).

DC had two Senators teams. The first, the one that gets the most mention in the history books, moved to Minnesota and became the Twins after 1960. A second one was reestablished the next year and took all the rights with them when they moved after 1971 and became the Texas Rangers.

I definitetly have some dumb ones that bother the hell out of me

NY knicks (knicker bockers)
philly 76ers ???
S.F. 49ers ???
florida panthers (didn't know they had a panther pop in florida??)
finally they changed the Mighty ducks to respectable (ducks)
Atlanta thrashers ??
nashville predators - ?
cleveland browns - ?
calgary flames In freezin ass canada ??
to be continued!! BTW I won't even touch college teams!!

Nashville Predators: Maybe the owner was a fan of the movies?
Cleveland Browns: I believe they're named for former coach Paul Brown. Dont ask about the dogs, I dont know about that.

and has anyone explained the 'CINCINATTI REDS' ?

WASN'T 'RED'S' SUPPOSED to be some communist reference or something?
what was 'a red' way back when?

Reds was inspired by the Red Stockings. And yes, they did change to Redlegs in the 50s so the team wouldnt be associated with Communism.

Isn´t the thrasher Georgia´s state bird?
And didn´t they burn down Atlanta during the civil war?
The AHL has two Admirals teams nowadays.

Whittier college, Richard Nixon's alma mater

Do you guys ever play the Irvine Anteaters? :1orglaugh

Ottawa Senators is pretty lame. What next, Presidents?

The original Ottawa Senators were named in the early 1900s, back when there were teams like the Victoria Shamrocks, Vancouver Millionaires and Montreal Maroons. Names weren't vicious and menacing like they are now. When the new Ottawa team started in 1993, the consensus choice was to resurrect the Senators nickname.

The stupidest nicknames are names that have nothing to do with their city. The Utah Jazz started as the New Orleans Jazz. The name Jazz makes sense with New Orleans, but I don't know of many jazz musicians in Utah. Same goes with the Los Angeles Lakers which started in Minneapolis. The only lakes in or near Los Angeles are swimming pools!
