Kamryn Renfro, left, shaved her head in solidarity with friend Delaney Clements, who is battling cancer. (Face …A 9-year-old Colorado girl who shaved her head to show support for her best friend battling cancer, was barred from attending school because her baldness violates its dress code. But on Tuesday night, following an outcry about the situation on social media, the Caprock Academy charter school in Grand Junction plans to hold a special meeting to determine if an exception will be made for the empathetic third grader, Kamryn Renfro.

“Caprock Academy does have a detailed dress code policy, which was created to promote safety, uniformity, and a non-distracting environment for the school’s students. Under this policy, shaved heads are not permitted,” the school noted in a community statement, released to parents Monday. “Exceptions, however, are sometimes made under exigent and extraordinary circumstances.” The statement was posted on Facebook by Wendy Smith Campbell — whose daughter, Delaney Clements, is battling the rare childhood cancer neuroblastoma, and whose hair loss from chemotherapy inspired her friend Kamryn to go bald too. To the post, Campbell added, “Please tell me how a shaved head is a distraction to a learning environment,” prompting a slew of supportive responses.

Kamryn, who was permitted to return to school on Tuesday for the time being, tells KKCO that she decided to shave her head because “it felt like the right thing to do.” And at least one other friend has joined her as of Monday, according to a photo of another shiny-headed girl posted to Campbell’s Facebook page, with the caption, “Another baldie to add to the bunch!!!!”

Facebook posts — by both Campbell and Kamryn's mom, Jamie Olson Renfro — brought the story to light beginning on Sunday. That’s when Jamie wrote, in part, “We do sign that we understand and agree to the rules every year...but honestly, I never thought my 9-year-old daughter would do something so courageous, brave and selfless. For this reason, I am asking for anyone that would like to support Kamryn, to do so. I have to wake a little girl up tomorrow, who was excited to go to school and talk to her peers about what she had done and why, and I get to try to explain why she can't do that without making her lose her spirit or feel like she is being punished for something so amazing.” That post, shared more than 180 times, drew many concurrent comments, including, “Anyone would be lucky to have her as a friend. I hope the school realizes the error of their decision.”

Campbell, in turn, posted a photo of Delaney and Kamryn together, writing, “So very upset that they would punish a beautiful little girl for being strong and brave and standing up for what she cares and believes in!!!” Since Monday, it’s garnered 660 likes and has been shared more than 2,100 times. And the majority of commenters have been overwhelmingly supportive. "That little girl rocks!! And so do her parents for raising such an amazingly compassionate and empathetic human!! Good for them. Stand strong!," wrote one Facebook user. "If the little boys do it, she should be able to do it too. She is so full of compassion and love, we all could learn from this sweet girl," wrote another.

Caprock Academy did not respond to a phone call or email from Yahoo Shine; Campbell and Renfro also could not be reached.

But on Tuesday, Renfro added a lengthy post to Facebook to thank everyone for their support “from the bottom of our hearts,” and to explain that there is no ill will. “At no point during this ordeal was Kamryn's school not supportive of her decision, nor show compassion...they just made a decision to enforce their dress code, which we were asking to be changed,” she writes. “They responded to all of our requests, and have treated us with nothing but respect the whole time. Now that we have seen just how much 2 little girls can change the world and touch so many hearts, we are asking for all of this attention to embrace awareness of childhood cancer.”

It's possible to express your disdain for the people who made the decision to kick her out without insulting an entire country's population. Cunt.

Sorry but...yes...as long as the entire country population fights to reverse the decision and calls the decisioner a CUNT. Until then, the OP is right, in my book. Don't forget that American people went on the street to protest against Crimea independence. It's all about the right things.

Just a example of stupid stuff that happens in this country.

Would be better if the school tried to stop bullies instead of kicking out a girl supporting a friend.

And for cunt, I will be dat :)

Meh, its an on the fence sort of thing. Obviously exceptions are made for extraordinary circumstances. An obvious example of that would be cancer victims themselves would be allowed with bald heads. The school may have made the wrong decision but I think its equally stupid to make a big deal out of it and act like its some form of massive injustice. Would it be that hard for her to wear a wig to school and go bald the rest of the time she is with her friend?

I'm sorry: are you saying that being kicked from school because you shaved your head shouldn't be a big deal? What if she was kicked from a catholic school for being a muslim or gay? That would have been a bigger deal? Because we all know that it would have been a fucking bigger deal. You really believe that kicking a kid from school because she shaved her head should not be a big deal? This world is dead. Good luck, guys.

No, Im sorry. I dont think its a huge deal. I think people who think its a big deal are being drama queens. Has the school said it wouldnt reinstate her even if she agreed to wear a wig? I mean, if they werent willing to work with her I might have a problem with it. But I think we have a big problem with people being narcissists and not conforming to societal standards. No, I dont think this is the great tragedy of our lives when we have photographers being forced to take photos of homosexual weddings and bakers being forced to bake homosexual wedding birthday cakes.

There are orgs who supply wigs for kids doing Chemo, Locks of Love, and the chemo girl could wear a wig.
You're right...but the school only got rude about the Dress Code stuff, it was willfully shaving her hair off that was the violation. The chemo kid wasn't disciplined.
She's a kid, I get it, but clearing it first w/the school admin woulda been better.

You're right DT, millions don't know of this, millions have their own problems keeping them busy, and millions are concerned about Ukraine, Venezuala, ******** (some other place where there's strife, famine, death and destruction), etc.; and anyone who thinks the USA is more rigid and set in it's ways than 99.7% of E and W Europe is either wrong, slow witted, or MustBeShit the idiot Euro Troll.
This will be like 6 yo charged w/sexual harassment, gone and worked out before everyone can even get to pontificate on the story on FOs..
The decision maker at the school was right but stupid; things will be worked outquickly...nightmare publicity for a private school.
Good for the friend and her parents...nice to see some heart actively displayed .
Cool kid.

Ahh yes, I forgot about Venezuela. Where apparently there are now shortages of diapers and toilet paper because the people there were gullible enough to believe in socialism. Then some of them flee because of the bad situation - they come to the United States ..........and then vote for Barack Obama. Aint human nature and politics just swell?

So a bald kid at school is ugly and disgraceful and should wear a wig or being kicked, but horse Michelle Obama at the White House is cool. I support the OP, if that is the case: stupid Americans.
Oh, now someone, please, call me racist because i just called a black woman UGLY like a horse.

The deal is she did it for support for her friend and did not break the dress code by showing up in punk rock attire.

The school administrator should seen that instead of taking a zero tolerance policy at 100% face value.

Wear a wig, wow.

Get the fuck out of my country you sorry ass bitch!

And what about the African American boys who shave their heads to look like DMX, The Game, or any other rapper with a shave head at that school that idolize those rappers.

Maybe you should go to Venezuela. You will feel right at home. There is a lack of toilet paper there.

Look, if some random kid at the school shaves her head, gets kicked out of the school as a result, and then her parent complains and accuses the school of not being consistent with the rules by pointing out that [NOBABE]the kid[/NOBABE] with cancer was allowed to go bald, the school will be able to inform the parent very quickly that that kid was allowed to go bald because she has cancer. The parent will then quickly shut her trap. That is very black and white. But when you start saying "Well, that girl was allowed to shave her head because she knows somebody who has cancer" - then things start to get a little more gray and wish washy. That's probably what the school administrator was thinking about. It might have been the wrong decision, but my point is the way some of you people are acting, one would think it was the cancer victim herself that was kicked out of the school for going bald.

You keep avoiding the main question: what is wrong in being bald? Why an individual shouldn't shave their head without being negated access to education? Gays adoption is a big thing, but a bald kid kicked from school is not. I think you are the one who should go to live in Venezuela: they have millions of nazi rules that shouldn't be a big deal, there.

A heartwarming show of solidarity by one girl to her ill friend. Maybe against the rules but nobody has been injured or killed. There seems to be a lack of common sense applied here.

How this thread has descended into slagging Venezuela, Crimea and Mrs Obama's big face may add credence to the thread title's insinuation.
