Deeply religious, heterosexual men do not necessarily watch more porn than other men — but even viewing a small amount of porn can trigger deep feelings of guilt in those with pre-existing disorder known as “scrupulosity,” according to a new study by researchers at the University of South Alabama, and Chatham University in Pittsburgh.

“Scrupulosity” is sometimes referred to as “Religious OCD,” according to the medical site Healthline. Classified as a form of obsessive-compulsive disorder, people suffering from scrupulosity occurs when people become “overly concerned with the fear that they are doing something that goes against their religious beliefs or is immoral,” according to mental health counselor Stephanie Woodrow, quoted by Healthline.

This is one of the very purpose of religion : to make you feel bad, guilty about something that makes you feel good, tell you that feeling good is wrong, that you'd rather feel miserable.

No it's not. People who misinterpret what they're teaching -- or being taught -- are the ones with the problem. Dig deeper into studies and you'll find that the problem people have with religious scrupulosity goes deeper than just religion. If there were no religion, the people who are miserable about that would focus on something else to be miserable about. And there are plenty of people out there ready and willing to exploit that mental health problem. For example, in the US, it's the fundamentalist preachers and TV scammers who rip off people for millions of dollars a year.
