Unfortunately, the cathedral was closed Monday due to a funeral for a local ********* (was in the theater and a big contributer to charities around Canterbury). So we were only able to walk the outer grounds and go in the crypt where no filming/photos were allowed. It was still pretty damned impressive, especially since there were some pillars from another church dating sometime in 600AD.

nice fucking pics! that one through the window is especially cool as ****.

inspires me for some castle themed d&d.

Did you ever once consider taking down a couple of those shields so you could later thwack Anders on the top of the head later?

You could not visit because Cthulhu made arrangements for the death of that '*********' ^^

Nice pictures, though!

Damn, that's amazing. Great pictures.

I've spent the last two months blabbing with construction guys who are renovating two rooms in one of the clubs I work for, asking them about how stone work was done before the advent of power tools. They don't know. These guys are just cutting granite and marble tiles, not forming ornate columns and gargoyles.

I suspect all the detailing on Cantebury Cathedral was actually accomplished by some guys with hammers and chisels, which is crazy when you look at.

Organized religion, for better or worse, has resulted in some mind blowing architecture.

"Keep chiseling or you're going to Hell!", actually seemed to work pretty well.

:whip:;)

I think I read that right now Canterbury employes 17 full time stone masons and 6-7 stained glass restorers. Of course there's modern techniques being used, but a lot of that are skills that have been ****** down from ****** to *** (and these days ********).

Down in the crypt there were a few tombs that you could actually get close to and touch. The face of one tomb was completely worn away as were a lot of the adornments on the walls of the tomb (faceless angels and whatnot). Since it's a major pilgrimage site, it's pretty amazing to think that that's hundreds of years of touching that wore down the stone work.

Of course there was pieces missing, which could be some modern day vandalism but I think a lot of that happened when the pilgrims came and wanted to take something home with them.

When I read the words "faceless angels" I got a chill down my spine for some reason. . .

;)

Post more vacation pics, those previous ones were amazing.

Now when you were at either of these sites did you happen to see two stoner dudes arriving in a phone booth from San Dimas Calirfornia?

I've been deceived! The thread title clearly stated that there would be pictures of Petra in the bath! I want my money back!

Can I raise a practical question at this point? Are we gonna do "Stonehenge" tomorrow?

Since my girlfriend had used the camera and I didn't check to see if she had reset it to the normal settings most our pictures turned out to be ****...

But at least one picture turned out nice...

I'll see what else I can drum up. I took more video than pictures, so I'll throw some of those up when I get it edited appropriately (don't want to **** my friends off by putting them on a porn board).

You would have documented this with multiple cams, right?

No cams were allowed in the crypt, otherwise I would have.

Nope. Though I may have possibly seen them last Wed night when I was ******* *****. :D
