Public highways are one of the finest examples of Socialism in America. So are public schools, public parks and public libraries. Not to mention Social Security and Medicare. And police departments and town garbage collections and public health care and so on and so on. Even benefits provided for Congress Members are a form of Socialism. There is no such thing as a capitalist economy, the U.S. is a mixed-economy, a system where both the state and private sector direct the economy

I don't understand how Americans buy into the scare tactics of Republican mouthpieces who decry socialism as the boogeyman. For christ's sake, if Republicans hate socialism let's see them give up the Social Security and Medicare. I think you'll see them change their tune reaaaaal quick.

That's more like communism. There is a difference between democratic socialism and Marxist communism. You are describing a Soviet style situation where every business is owned by the government, everyones home is government owned, and everyone gets paid the same amount of money no matter what they do for a living. NO ONE in the OWS movement, nor anyone who sympathizes with them, is advocating Soviet style - Marxist communism.

He's not wrong at all. Both Social Security and Medicare are socialist programs. Just because you have paid into them doesn't change that fact. I've paid into (forced to pay into) them too. And if I die before I begin collecting, is that money returned to my estate? Nope. It stays in the pot. And let's say I've married a succession of women over the years... married to each a minimum of seven (I believe is the minimum number of) years. Even if none of those women (ex-wives) has ever held a job or paid into the system, when they retire, each one of them will be able to collect a percentage of whatever benefit I am eligible for. What they collect will not affect my benefit - simply based on my level of benefits. As for Medicare, the benefits that you can collect have no connection to what you've paid in. Upon retirement, you'll pay the same $96.40 monthly premium (or whatever it is now) that I will. And if you get sick twice as much as I do, your premium stays the same.
Look, you don't seem like a bad guy. But before you continue telling other people to get their facts straight or telling me I don't understand economics (when I'm sitting here with a B.A. in Economics and an MBA), you owe it to yourself to learn at least the BASICS of what you're talking about. Take some time away from this thread and go to Google or Wiki or whatever... but learn the basic definition of socialism, communism, capitalism or any other economic or governmental system that you want to discuss.
Like I said before, there are MANY topics that I don't know jack about. I do know how to rebuild a Weber carburetor (yay, me). But I don't know for certain that I could rebuild a Holley 4-barrel carburetor - I've never tried. And I don't know jack about rebuilding fuel injection systems (mechanical or electronic). So before I'd go shooting my mouth off about Holley carbs or fuel injection, I believe I'd spend some time learning about them. But that's just me... cause I'm rather sensitive about (unintentionally) making a fool of myself.
I'm just sayin'.

Not sure why the Republicans are always labeled the bad guys. I guess they are dicks for standing up for what they believe in. I can't believe so many people fell for Obama's bullshit lies. The only change he has provided was change for the worst. The US is supposed to be based on freedom. The last few years it feels anything but free.

If you're talking about the Republican(?) OP who started this thread, I think he's more of a TEA party fellow. Though I guess that distinction amounts to six in one hand and half a dozen in the other these days. But anyway, I don't care if the person posing a question or making a statement is a Republican, Democrat, Communist, liberal, conservative or libertarian... at the very least, I expect a person to be able to know the basic definition of a word BEFORE using it. Let's say I looked at the OP's Harley in the other thread and said, "man, that sure is a nice snowmobile"... wouldn't he be in the right to correct me? At least in what I do, words are important. But it seems like when people of the "conservative persuasion" misuse words and terms, they expect a free pass much of the time. For whatever reason, being challenged on the facts and data (something some of us rely on in our day to day lives) is not something they can deal with. Which leads me to a question:
As for all of these "freedoms" that you and others have apparently lost over the past three years or so, would you do me the kindness of listing them here for all to see?

See, this is where YOU are wrong. You pay into social security and medicare, but it doesn't go into your own little account. The money you pay gets put into the system and is distributed amongst the people. You sir, need to get YOUR facts straight.
I never labeled Republicans as bad guys. But when you have propaganda lies spread around by political talking heads as gospel, on both sides of the aisle, that's what I have a problem with. Limbaugh, Beck, Grace and Olbermann are guilty of this and they are the ones that cause the political rift that is happening in this country. It really bugs me when people buy into this crap.
And no, I am not a registered democrat but an Independent. I'm seriously considering voting for a Republican if they can provide a good argument to me for why they should be elected.
