So something happened in Puerto Rico on Tuesday...

I was looking over the various results of the election on Wikipedia, and I found out that on Tuesday Puerto Rico held a referendum on whether or not the island should apply for statehood. And unlike past referendums, this one passed with 61 per cent of voters saying they should become a state.

I'm kind of surprised no one is talking about this. Had anyone even heard of this before the election? Considering it sounds like the 51st State might be arriving soon, you'd think more people would be talking about this. Unless there is some kind of hurdle outside of applying for it and having Congress sign off on it?

I'm not bullshitting when I say that in my opinion, the only reason they are not a state already is because we don't want to try to shoehorn another star onto the flag.

Health care costs will continue to go up because of Obamacare.

Blacks and Hispanics are fatter, dumber, and love handouts. (The Obama phone nut is black.)

Just look at ghettos and barrios in New York, California, St Louis, Chicago, Michigan and so on.

Do some research.

Yet another myth and half truth that the insane right tries to spin.

There are more whites on food stamps and welfare than anyone else

Their percentage as a group may be low but by being the majority the actual number is big

Americans in general are pretty damn stupid by and large

Do we really wanna have a contest as to who is dumber than who in a nation full of idiots?

Cuz it is pretty sad when you think about it.

Indiana is a northern state with a southern atittude.

KKK was massive in Indiana At one point

You can take them with ya as a consolation prize for all the Zolfster cares.:thefinger

If the South goes, they are more than welcome to tke Indiana with them. As a state, it's as dumb as Mississippi and/or Alabama anyway.

I think the only thing preventing Puerto Rico from becoming a state in the past was that they couldn't get enough Puerto Ricans to vote in favor of it. From what I understand, they enjoy many of the benefits of being US Citizens without the increased taxation of being an actual state. But don't quote me on that...

Jesus Christ guys, you derail threads fast.

If I am not mistaken they already have a conceptual flag made for a 51st state, do they not? I believe it is five rows of six and three sevens.

They don't get representation in Congress, which is fairly important to them. With the economic downturn it seems many think the best chance for the future of the island is to become a state to get more benefits.

I actually did not know this, but just looked it up. Now we have no excuse. Let's make 'em a state! :banger:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puerto_Rico_(proposed_state)

Excerpted:

Puerto Ricans are American citizens, and as such, Puerto Ricans can vote in U.S. presidential elections. However, residents of Puerto Rico itself, cannot vote in U.S. presidential elections, whether they are Puerto Rican, White American, Black American, Asian American, or Latino. The territory of Puerto Rico not being able to vote in U.S. presidential elections should not be construed as Puerto Ricans themselves not being able to vote in U.S. presidential elections. Puerto Ricans can vote for president provided they reside in one of the 50 states or the District of Columbia and not in Puerto Rico itself.

I don't get this. Sounds like some twisted bullshit going on. If they're laying out money and serving in the military, one citizen, one vote.

Residents of Puerto Rico pay U.S. federal taxes: import/export taxes, federal commodity taxes, social security taxes, etc. Most Puerto Rico residents do not pay federal income tax but do pay federal payroll taxes (Social Security and Medicare). However, federal employees, or those who do business with the federal government, Puerto Rico–based corporations that intend to send funds to the U.S. and others also pay federal income taxes. Puerto Ricans may enlist in the U.S. military. Puerto Ricans have fully participated in all U.S. wars since 1898; 52 Puerto Ricans have been killed in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan as of Nov. 2012.[

During the campaign, Gov. Romney endorsed statehood, saying: "I will support the people of Puerto Rico if they make a decision that they would prefer to become a state; that's a decision that I will support. I don't have preconditions that I would impose."

President Obama had also supported potential statehood, writing "I am firmly committed to the principle that the question of political status is a matter of self-determination for the people of Puerto Rico."

In November 2012, Puerto Rico achieved a first clear electoral mandate rejecting the present form of territorial status, and requesting the U.S. Congress to admit Puerto Rico as the 51st State of the United States of America. In all earlier referenda, votes for statehood were matched almost equally by votes for remaining an American territory, with a small balance of votes cast for independence. Support for U.S. statehood has risen in each successive popular referendum until a clear majority of 61.15% was attained on November 2012.[5][6] The most recent referendum process began in October 2011 when Governor Luis Fortuño proposed a bill, following the recommendation of the President's Task Force on Puerto Rico's Status to provide for self-determination. The proposed bill set the date of August 12, 2012 to hold the first part of a two-step status plebiscite. The first question on the plebiscite would ask voters whether they wanted to maintain the current commonwealth status under the territorial clause of the U.S. Constitution or whether they preferred a non-territorial option. A second question on the plebiscite would offer three status options: statehood, independence or free association.[7] This bill was brought before the House of Representatives of Puerto Rico, then the Senate of Puerto Rico in 2011 to effect the governor's proposal. The bill passed on December 28, 2011. The date was revised such that both steps were voted on in a single ballot on November 6, 2012. The statehood position was endorsed by the New Progressive Party of Puerto Rico. As a result of that ballot, 54% of the population voted to change the status quo, with 61.15% of the population voting for statehood as the preferred change from the status quo.

This part is news to me. I always assumed that Puerto Ricans were overwhelmingly in favor of statehood. Apparently I was wrong and this is a recent development. Fuckin' West Wing.

There's more at the link, including the fact that every President and both Republicans and Democrats favor statehood. Good reading. :)

This has been a heated argument for many years down there. They have 4 choices. Become a sovereign nation, apply for statehood, amend the current Commonwealth status, or continue with the same one. Puerto Rican citizens have been split on all 4 of these. Mind you now, they are still a territory of the USA and the congress decides the first step forward on these matters. Eventually it turned to a vote on the matter decided by Puerto Rico. They chose statehood.

With the current political climate; The only way another state will ever be added is if two are admitted at the same time, one leaning Democratic, one leaning Republican. All the likely states (Puerto Rico, District of Columbia, Virgin Islands, American Samoa) lean Democratic, so it won't happen.

The jobs have been shipped over seas. So, more whites would be working if there were actual jobs.

Whites are the real minority. The elitist have been trying to genocide or at least cull the white population for awhile now.

Some of the elitist's foot soilder's:

“And then finally I want to say that we need one idea, and we’re not thinking about a solution to the problem … And the one idea is, how we are going to exterminate White people because that in my estimation is the only conclusion I have come to. We have to exterminate White people off the face of the planet to solve this problem … [We need to] get very serious and not be diverted from coming up with a solution to the problem and the problem on the planet is White people.”

Tim Wise

Anti-White “diversity” consultant, anti-White polemicist

“It’s OK. Because in about forty years, half the country will be Black or brown. And there is nothing you can do about it…”

Mr. Wise’s article not only promotes but gleefully celebrates White genocide, cruelly taunts White Americans about the upcoming deaths of individual American Whites and the larger dispossession of White American society, makes specific references to the physical deaths of White Americans (heartbeats, “tick tock”), and gloats about the growing Mexican invasion into America and displacement of White American culture by using Spanish phrases. After the well-deserved outcry against Mr. Wise’s hateful and genocidal screed, Mr. Wise attempted to cover his tracks by deleting some of the more opprobrious sections.
