'Significant' water found on Moon

This is big news.Water means a colony could be established. It can be used not only for drinking water but as a source of energy and oxygen/air to breath.

"If future investigations find the quantities to be particularly large, this water could become a useful resource for any astronauts who might base themselves at the lunar poles.

"It can be used for drinking water," said Mike Wargo, Nasa's chief lunar scientist for exploration systems.

"You can break it down and have breathable air for crews. But also, if you have significant quantities of this stuff, you have the constituents of one of the most potent rocket fuels - oxygen and hydrogen."

And for brewing beer.

Time to invest in Brita. They'll be the first ones to establish a moon base.

If scientists claim you need water for life then these kind of discoveries give proof that we are ourselves might be "aliens" and the only reason we're here and not say the moon is because Earth had the right conditions for life to take place and evolve over time.

As hydrogen and to a far lesser extent oxygen are two of the most prevalent elements throughout the universe. It's safe to say that there is also an abundant amount of water throughout the universe. Earth does indeed have the right conditions for life whereas the moon does not. There seems to be enough evidence to show that life did indeed begin here, although I have heard the alien life form theory before, but - as I say - it would seem to far more logical (going by some of the experiments being conducted) that life started here.

PBS has a new series on the origins of human life. It's been interesting stuff with a lot of new fossils that have yielded a lot of new information.Humans clearly developed from primates like chimps over millions of years.

Indeed and anyone who can't see that is blind. What I was talking about was the origin of life itself. Supernatural or chemical?

Here's one such study. While it doesn't prove that this was the process of how life began. It is one step in the right direction that may one day lead scientists to be able to prove how life arose on this planet: http://www.sciencenews.org/view/generic/id/43723/title/How_RNA_got_started (You'll have to pay to read the actual paper, which I'm not going to do).

Three lullabies in an ancient tongue
Water for the astronauts, how do we know if it safe.

That is irrelevant. Any water can be purified and made safe to drink....that's why the astronauts are able to drink their own piss. This is a discovery of monumental proportions....the moon can be made habitable because of this. Let's hope that the presence of water is ubiquitous and not just located in a few spots on the moon. If it is readily available for use by man, we could easily colonize it. Awesome news.

Hiliary 2020
we are in one galaxy with about 400 billions solar systems ,there are billions of known galaxys, some containing up to 10 trillion solar systems.
how many planets and moons is that?
interesting article, surprised they didnt know about it sooner.

That was just when all the astronauts took a piss up there. Nothing to see here, move along.
