Should 16 Year Olds Be Allowed To Drive?...

I can't see age making a difference. A boy racer is a boy racer whether he is 17 or 35, and bad drivers will be bad whatever age they are. I started driving at 3 (yes, three) years old and have always been careful no matter how old I was.

And that statistic about young people involved in accidents is misleading. They get involved through inexperience and bad reactions, but don't neccessarily cause the crash in the first place. That is usually left to the 40 year old businessman in his BMW.

No, 16 year olds make stupid decisions behind the wheel. If they aren't even old enough to vote or smoke cigs or even buy certain cough medicines in the store, I don't think they should be able to drive.

I think people should just be responsible for there own actions. I don't believe in making up tons of laws. People need to live there life. Hold those dumb ones responsible for driving drunk or irresponsible.

When I was 16 y/o I was definitly a hell raiser. I didn't drive like a jackass though. There are times to be safe and times to raise hell.

Its' not gonna make much difference. Like I said, they gotta get their cherry popped some time, and 16 vs 18 isn't much of a difference. Plus, they already have laws on the books about individuals under 18 not being allowed to drive while on the phone, or text, or anything for that matter. :2 cents:

While I agree on the fundamental there, this is something that is potentially (and frequently) lethal to others. Even if we take alcohol out of the equation.

I think it's actually a huge difference. Those are some big growing years (think: in the thick of high school, or soon/just graduated - quite different!).

But then again, I'd disagree with having to "get their cherry popped some time". I'm in my early twenties and have yet to ever operate any motor vehicle bigger than a go-kart.

If they manage to pass the test, then sure why not.

I agree that 16 year olds and 18 year olds are completely different (when it comes to overall maturity), but they're both still idiots who know absolutely nothing about life and the seriousness of the responsibilities involved with it.

Once you get to your mid-20's, you realize that when you were 18, you were still a fucking immature moron who probably should've died a bunch of times due to your own stupidity.

Like my dad used to say: we don't let 16-year-olds go into the military, and a car is like a bazooka.

Right. Exactly. How much harder is it than that...really. :dunno: Shit, I know old people that couldn't pass that damn test. My hippie cousin is almost a vegetable from years of liquid microdot, and I drive better than him with a 5th in my system. :thefinger

One on hand, teenagers (for the most part) are irresponsible, eratic drivers who have an "I'm invincible" attitude that causes most of our country's accidents and I don't think it's good to have them on the road.

It's not a good idea to have any of them on the road. Change the driving age to eighteen.

What do we do?

Two years minimum driving school and change the driving age to eighteen.

I been driving since i was 14 got my license at 18. To be honest i was driving more carefully when i didn't had my license because i knew i would be fucked if something happened.

Driving is about experience and being responsible, yeah you can change the age but that wont help a thing if you lack the experience or for example drunk driving. I got friends who got their license at 20-21 and drive like idiots while my "brother in law" is still 15 and drives just fine and responsible.

The younger you learn to drive the better, it might not be a good idea to let them drive alone so maybe driving with an accompaniment.

So my opinion would be to keep it at the age of 16.

I am obviously in the minority here but I believe that 16 is an appropriate age to drive.
My wife and I are both 40 and we got our licenses at 16, so did the rest of her family and friends as well as mine. I can not remember one major accident caused by any of us other than the normal fender bender, hit a mail box or go into the ditch because Ohio is all ice in the winter.
At 16 we all had part time jobs, grocery store, fast food, etc. our parents made us pay for our cars, our insurance our gas, it was a huge responsibility that could be taken away at anytime. For me the responsibility equaled freedom and that was something I wanted more than life itself and consequently I behaved like a responsible driver who wanted more than anything to protect and preserve his license.
As a father of 3 pre teen kids I hope the driving age remains 16 and I have the honor of teaching my 3 kids the safe rules of the road.
Just my thoughts here but wanted to share them.

Yes, they should be allowed to drive.

Just not while texting, fixing their hair, putting on their makeup and eating a bowl of cereal simultaneously.

16 - Driving
18 - Voting ; Porn
21 - Alcohol

There is something totally wrong there in my opinion.

I wish that I could say as much. I produced a totaled vehicle. (bad judgment reckless drive one afternoon).
I'll admit it, as a group, my ''gang'' of friends, myself included, would often find ourselves tempting fate, smoking a bit of bud and intentionally getting a little sideways, but we had the good sense to do it in the wide open, undeveloped, rural areas or up in the wide open, mountain roads of central northern coastal Calif.

The "only" problem that I have about kids driving at the age of 16 is my recollection of having so much godam gusto brewin' up inside at that tender young age ! Hormones are just spinnin' 'round like a jet engine, you always want to be where the action is, you're thinking about all of the babes that you anticipate dating . . . and on and on, there was always something going on to capture our attentions, we were like little curious Golden Retriever puppy dogs. :D
Two years later when we turned 18, wow ! what a feeling of maturity ! Everything seemed to calm down, for it was time to begin acting like real adults and become "superiors", that is, simply maintain a more serious disposition than the 16 and 17 year olds around us. :nono:

Yes, Yes, Yes to all of the above. That's exactly what the drill was for myself as well.
