Sean Connery Retires

It is a day that true movie fans will be at once sad and happy. The great Sir Sean Connery has hung up his acting hat, ending a career that can only be described as nothing short of extraordinary. It is very rare that an actor of this caliber comes along. Starting his film career in the mid 1950's, he worked constantly, then in 1962 he took the role that would define the gentleman spy, James Bond 007. Starting with Dr. No Connery would go on to do 6 007 films in total (Unless you count 1983's Never Say Never Again which was not an official part of the 007 series) and while his successors did their best with the role, it is Sean Connery who will be forever known as the definitive Bond. While some of the the movies he did were not always great films (Highlander 2 anyone?) He always seemed to bring something memorable to his roles, no matter what the quality of the overall film may have been. Aside from Bond, some of Sir Sean's most memorable characters were:Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez from Highlander (1986), Jimmy Malone from The Untouchables (1987), Lt. Col. Alan Caldwell from The Presidio (1988), Professor Henry Jones from Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade (1989), Capt. Marko Ramius from The Hunt For Red October (1990), an uncredited cameo as King Richard in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves (1991), Capt. John Connor in Rising Sun (1993), the voice of Draco the dragon in Dragonheart (1996), the list goes on an on. This was a man who loved what he did, and was brilliant at it. He not only loved acting, he loved movies and it showed in everything he did. Post some of your favorite moments from any of Sir Sean's films , share your memories of great actor who is taking a well desreved rest. I myself am grateful that Mr. Connery graced us with his presence on the silver screen for so long, he will remain an icon in the entertainment world forever. Here's to you Sir Sean, thanks for the memories and enjoy your retirement.

Here's a great response to Steve Buscemi accusing Capt John Connor of being a racist Japan basher in 1993's Rising Sun:"What is Japan bashing? What does it mean? All creatures are created equal except the Japaneese? You stupid little ****, fuck off!!"

'Indiana Jones' returning, but without Sean Connery
The actor, who played Harrison Ford's ****** in "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade," won't be returning for the latest installment.
By Robert W. Welkos, Times Staff Writer
June 8, 2007

Indiana Jones will be back, hat and all. But his *** likes retirement too much, which means that actor Sean Connery, who played Harrison Ford's ****** in 1989's "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade," won't be returning for the latest installment in the lucrative action franchise that begins filming this month.

Connery, 76, who retired from acting in 2005, released a statement Thursday saying that he wouldn't be reprising the role, even though he was plenty tempted by the offer to return to the big screen and appear in the fourth installment of "Indiana Jones," which again will be directed by Steven Spielberg and produced by George Lucas.

"I get asked the question so often, I thought it best to make an announcement," Connery said in a statement posted on Lucasfilm's "Indiana Jones" website. "I thought long and hard about it, and if anything could have pulled me out of retirement it would have been an 'Indiana Jones' film. I love working with Steven and George, and it goes without saying that it is an honor to have Harrison as my ***."

Connery had some tongue-in-cheek advice for the 64-year-old Ford, whom he called "Junior" in the last "Indiana Jones" film: "Demand that the critters be digital, the cliffs be low, and for goodness sake keep that whip by your side at all times in case you need to escape from the stunt coordinator!"

Meanwhile, Lucasfilm announced that three more actors — Cate Blanchett, John Hurt and Ray Winstone — have thrown their hats into the ring to join Ford in the new film. Paramount Pictures plans to release the movie, which is as yet untitled, on May 22, 2008.

Translation as to why he wont be in Indiana Jones 4 : They wouldnt pay him the money he wanted in order to reprise the role.

Rats!!! And to think that he was heavily rumored to play the titular role in the remake of the motion picture RoboCop!

Shocking, I tell you! Delta City doesn't stand a chance!

:(

That's news to me, about him not returning for the fourth Indiana Jones flick. That movie is rumoured to be about extraterrestrials visiting Peru or something. I heard Karen Allen is returning.

This is sad, he's my ******'s idol.

He sure is.

I won't miss him. He made some nice movies (The Man Who Would Be King, ****** On the Orient Express, The Hill), but he never impressed me as an actor. :2 cents:

I can say I have never seen one of his movies. so not news to me.

You've never seen ONE movie with Sean Connery in it? He's been in so many, that's difficult to believe, but hey, I'd invite you to check out his IMDB page, and watch at least some of the stuff he's been in. There are some great movies this guy's been a part of since the 1960s.

I don't think it's entirely fair to say that the reason he won't do Indy 4 is the money. He's 76, and it's a very large undertaking to do a movie. I imagine it's even more difficult when it's an action movie that has the scope and size that the Indy Jones films have had. Maybe he's just really enjoyed not acting anymore.

And DVC- I don't think it was ever his intention to wow everyone as an actor, but then, since when has that mattered to how good movies are? I mean, was anyone ever blown away by the acting of John Wayne? Arnold Schwarzenegger? No. They were movie stars, not actors. I think Connery definitely fits into that for me. Fun to watch, but only adequate as an actor.

Enjoy retirement, Sean!

Yep! But John Wayne was lucky he had found two exceptional directors who always got the best out of him and directed him to greatness: John Ford and Howard Hawks. I really like the "Duke" in their movies. In any other effort ('cept for The Shootist), he's plain silly and dumb.

Connery never found a mentor as talented as those two. He worked on a frequent basis with Sidney Lumet, whom I hold in highest esteem, but somehow Sean didn't grab me by the balls even in his better movies. Simply not my cup of tea.

No comment on Schwarzenegger ;) :)

Well, with Connery it was usually the movie, not him, that grabbed me by the balls. Hunt for Red October and The Untouchables come to mind. He's good in them, but it's the movies that are great.

John Wayne as... Genghis Khan.......

Schwarzenegger was probably best for me when he was with John McTiernan in Predator. That's his one movie where I actually forget about Arnie, and focus more on the character he's playing. Good story telling on that one.

Of course, he's always made good movies with Jim Cameron too.

I agree he is a Legend Love him in the Hunt For Red October.

He his a great actor and sorry to see him retire.

He mostly didn't impress me as an actor, and I think just went with a lot of bad films. A friend said once, "For the money", which might or might not be correct.

I liked him as Bond and thought Medicine Man was very good and unique.

It's a shame, he's one of the few actors I actually like!
