So I did a couple of searches and this topic doesn't seem to have been covered yet.
The Japanese Institute of Cetacean Research says that they are allowed to harpoon 1000 whales a year to conduct "lethal research". The Sea Shepherd organization says that this is a ********* of international law, inhumane and a bogus front designed to put whale meat in upscale Japanese restaurants.

Having watched both seasons of Whale Wars and going through both the above websites front to back ..... I'm on the Sea Shepherds side. The Japanese whalers must be stopped and the (not so) extreme methods that Sea Shepherd uses seems to be the only way to make that happen. I, personally am very much a carnivore, not a tree-hugger and am pro-hunting. But enough is enough. The suffering and potential suffering of a complex and intelligent ****** is all I need to consider. We don't even know that much about whales. It takes over 20 minutes for the whalers to **** a whale that they have harpooned, and since they are a socially advanced, intelligent ******, there is no way of knowing how their mates and offspring feel about watching ***, *** or the *** get whacked.
Anyway, discuss.
