King Crimson? Early Peter Gabriel? While there are a good song here and there most progressive rock and the likes a just dull.
Holy Shit...talk about awesome:banger::eyeso::sing:I'm pretty sure Complete is the best band ever.
King Crimson? Early Peter Gabriel?
Try the whole Discipline album.
The title song from Three of a perfect pair is good though.
I do find it amusing that you seem to know why people stay away from Rush & attempt to intellectualise music to explain it. How on earth do you how much of the music we non-Rush fans have listen to? How on earth do you know what I, or anyone else who doesn't like Rush, likes as a song?!? How on earth do you know that most people who don't play an instrument stay away from Rush?!? & to say what they do is 'new' is laughable!I am noticing too many people are compairing apples and oranges when it comes to Rush!
Rush is a Progressive Rock Band... Just incase you don't know what that means here's quick answer. Progressive Rock is music in which classical music elements are combined with Rock. What are those elements? Well, they can appear as different time signatures, a break from the standard "Intro-4 Bar Phrase-8 Bar Phrase- Chorus/Refrain-8bar Phrase-Chorus-Bridge-8 bar phrase-and fade out (aka Nickleback and the two songs played over each other sounding exactly the same). Also, Rush does not use a string section but with Geddy on the Tauras Pedals and Keyboard (all while playing the bass and singing I might add) does fill that void.
So, even though I will not disagree that bands like The Ramones, Black Sabbath, and others that have been mentioned do not hold their own... they really can't be compaired to Rush! They are Completley different styles and approces to music! I mean, The Ramones made conscience efforts not to practice their insturments so they would not get good on them... their thought was to take music to its most raw roots and that is some they accomplished without a doubt! Now, could you imagine a band like Rush (or Pink Floyd, Yes, Dream Theater, etc.) ever thinking that? So, if that's what you like... fine! I enjoy it as well!
The Rush song The Spirit of Radio is the prime example of this Progressive Rock idea. The song does not even start with lyrics until roughly a minute into the tune. We do see a phrase with the lyrics part but the bridge in itself is almost its own song. Then, does the song go back to sounding like the start? Nope... we now hear this reggae inspired part at th end "For the words of the phropets were written on the studio wall..." Then the song ends... that's why it is 5 minutes long and not a radio friendly 2:30... this song takes you on a journey if you ask me! Also, I think that is why a tune like that holds up... Honestly... look through some of the music you have... how much of it do you really listen to? Yeah, you start out hard with it... crankin' it here and there... but a couple months later are you doing the same thing? I am going to say no!
I have a theory that people know more about music than they think they do. I in no way believe that I know everything about music, but from playing out in gigs, knowig how to read and write, etc. I feel I have a strong grasp on music theory. What has that given me? Well, I can use the correct termonlogy to take apart the song. You can do that too! You just don't know it!
So, long story short... I think a lot of people stay away from Rush because subconsciously you know it's different. It does not neatly fit into what you like as a song (that 8-bar etc example I gave before) so you have to actively listen to it to understand it! Most people who don't play an instrument stay away from this... it's new... it's different... they don't like it!
Incase you want to know... I have been playing percussion for over 20 years and the Bass for about 2.

& just because you play an instrument doesn't make your views any more valid, important or correct which is the tone I am getting from your waffle. On on level I admire your dedication to Rush but your argument comes across as extremely snobbish & you make sweeping generalisations about other peoples attitudes towards music which are totally unfounded.
I stay away from Rush because I listened to a few of their songs & thought it was boring rubbish. You like them, good for you I guess. But why not just accept that others don't? You're kind of like a religious zealot, but Rush is your religion!

This is the problem I have with fans of progressive rock.Well then...
It was not my intent to come across as snobbish by any means...
Several times during my "waffle" I mentioned that I also listen to a lot of the music that other people were mentioning... I also enjoy listening to it! I find it fun, enjoyable, and great music! Trust me... go through my iPod... Eclectic would be the word! I have ABBA, The Ramones, Whitney Houston, Thompson Twins, Supertramp, Van Halen, Madonna, Etc... Seriously... I just love music!
I started this thread because I feel Rush is currently the greatest band out there! If you don't agree... Cool! Whatever makes you happy makes me happy! If you check the first entry of this thread I wanted this to be a thread for fellow Rush fans... I asked for no hating! But... as we can see people come on here and type that Rush sucks and other things... Have I said anything about that? No! I knew people would do that! But, as a musician (snob?) I will call things like I see them and be able to back them up! Would you compare The Ramones to Madonna? Would you compare No Doubt to B.B. King? No Way!
So, when someone says Rush sucks and then compares them to a completley different style of music to prove their point I am going to address that! So, why don't I say that Rush is just the Greatest Progressive Rock Band? Well, I personally look at other factors... They are still making music, one of the best live shows you will ever see, no drama in the band, the crazy amount of awards they have won, their influence on todays bands, etc. and that is what makes them stand out to me to be the greatest band!
Finally, how do I think I know what people are listening to? Well, it's called Pop(ular) music for a reason! It's what people are listening to at the time! Look at the time of the song for these Pop tunes... notice a pattern? Every song seems to be the same length... the perfect radio slot time of roughly 2 minutes and 30 seconds? That's because it's a form! That does not mean it is bad... I like it too!
So, if this second waffle has made you even angrier I am sorry! Like I stated before... my intent with this thread was for Rush fans to talk about the band, the upcoming tour, the new album (23rd studio album FYI), and whatever else! I don't think any less of a person for not liking Rush, that would be snobbish and ignorant! That's not me! So, unlike a religious nut I will not be strapping a bomb to my chest in the near future and running into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame because Rush has not been inducted (yet)... That would just be stupid!
