and chef, a question if you please. why the need to make the food look pretty?

I don't know. It makes people feel like spending $30 for a small piece of lamb is worth it...even though it's still just a small piece of lamb.

The best service I ever had was on some cruise lines. Really excellent.

Cruise lines are awesome. I would go work for one, but you literally work around 100+ hours a week if you are an employee of the kitchen. The service is usually really good and the food is usually top notch as well. Ahh, the good life.

Chef? Do you like Gordon Ramsay and his Brit shows and Hell's Kitchen?

You know, I've only seen Hell's Kitchen maybe 2 or 3 times. It's always nice to see other chefs getting yelled at though. Soooooo enjoyable. :1orglaugh

havent really had the rude server experience. the places cant stand are the ones like Joes crab shack. all the servers are supposed to fucking sing and dance around, its annoying. but I love me some crab legs and shrimp.:glugglug:

I've had some pretty average trolley people during Yum Cha.

I guess they go through so many people, niceties are too much effort.

Presentation is nice. Icing on the cake.

I've seen people state that waiters on cruise ships make upward of $80,000 / yr. I think that's nuts. Maybe if everyone tipped the recommended. I think they make less than half that for their hard work. Carnival was the quality exception to the rule I experienced. Waiters had no clue what they were serving and people came around to try to sell chocolate in the shape of the ship. Passengers on formal nights used to show up wearing their best Budweiser T-shirts and gold chains. While the attitude of Celebrity in general was lousy, their food was top notch. While Royal Caribbean was a lot more user friendly, their food service, food quality, presentation, waiters and busboys were excellent.

Ramsey next to the fictional Garrett Blackstock of Chef! is pretty demanding for his guests. It's amazing to see what crud people are served sometimes and that the owners can't figure out why business drops off. You might like both of those.

If there was a "Pun of the Week" thread, I'd nominate that for sure.

Is Chef! a British show? I've never heard of it before you mentioned it earlier. I'd be kind of interested in seeing that.

Yes, BBCAmerica for about 2 seasons. Brits have the good sense to take off well written comedies before they grow stale as stone and go on 20 years longer than the jokes.

The only time I ran into an issue with a rude person in a restaurant is
when I was majorly overweight(I've lost a lot since then and still going) and the hostess tried to squeeze us into this undersized booth. And I told her that the booth was kind of small, and her remark was "maybe you're just too big". And my response was "well, you lost some customers" and we walked out. Granted I was fat, but there was no reason to say that bullshit. Never went back to that place ever again after that.

I have come up with a good way to solve those types of problems from restaurant employees. I just don't go to them, except for once in a very rare while and only if somebody else is paying. I don't get mad at them. They don't get mad at me. It's a nice system.

As long as the food is prepared well and they don't threaten me or spit on my food - it bothers me not much.

I almost hate overly friendly employees more then overly rude ones.

I hate phoniness.

Since we sharing bad service stories, I had one two nights ago.

I go into an Earls, I love one of their pizzas so I usually go in a few times a month for it. So this time I walk in and its packed busy (tourists), so we are asked if we mind being on the patio. I reply "of course not", its not the nicest most scenic patio in the city but its nicely covered so its like being inside. We get out there and there are no place settings, we order our food and for the first 5 minutes the server is fine.

The person I was with orders some salad and I order my pizza, and this is where the problems start. One random server comes and tosses my pizza (much smaller than it usually is) on my table and leaves while my friend is sitting food-less. No napkins or anything. 10 minutes later the salad shows up, but no utensils to eat it with. I ask for a refill on my drink, she walks off with it. She walks by with a giant tray of drinks, then back again and then past again with a single drink on a tray. 20 minutes later I am able to wave her down and she says "sit tight I'll get your refill", I also place an order for some wings at the same time. She comes back instantly with the drink this time. I finish my pizza and another server brings the wings by, by this time I need another refill. 25 minutes for this one, still no napkins on the table. No chili peppers for the pizza, basically ignored. Not to mention I was the first table next to the doorway into the restaruant. So when time comes to pay, I go to the bar and she comes running over, asking me how my food was and being all giddy. Threw her a zero tip and walked off.

Depends on how bad it is.

If it's reasonably tolerable, and there seems to be a reason for it, I'll let it slide and go back again.

If the second visit is just as bad (or worse), never again.

Seriously though, I won't eat at a restaurant anymore if the service is really bad. The worst thing for me: I won't leave a tip if the waitress runs my debit/credit card, and fails to notice it's a female name on the card, then hands it to my boyfriend to sign. That makes me more pissed than anything else. I won't leave a tip if the waitress ignores the table during the meal, but when it comes time to leave, she hovers around the table like a vulture, waiting for you to get up so she can see how much tip she gets. So yeah, those are the two no-nos when sputnik comes into a restaurant.

My mom used to do the same thing when I was little. In fact there was one time when I was about 16 that my mother and I went out to eat, and the waitress mistakenly thought my mother and I were a couple and handed me the receipt to sign. Needless to say she got an earful.

But are you the same way with cars? My mom would never buy a car if the salesman acknowledged the man first.
