I just wanted to give a brief update on Reputation Points.

As some of you noticed, your reputation points got cut in half for a short time between yesterday and now. The reason for this is we were tinkering with the values, basically trying to slow down the amount of reputation that is given out to slow down the amount of Freeones Points that are handed out. There's been some insane increase in points in only days. We kind of expected it over on this side.

In order to adjust things where they aren't as dramatic seeming, I went ahead and adjusted the amount of reputation you can give out instead. You can now rep people only 5x per day (the spread between people was adjusted as well, but only slightly).

This is my answer to try to keep reputation somewhat meaningful without having to eliminate certain post games. Please remember that nothing is final. Things will probably increase or decrease based on what I see over the next month.

Well, this will leave a lot of good posts without the rep they deserve, but it also will hopefully make people a little bit more careful about how they choose to use their rep.

I think perhaps it might be better, though, if rep was not allowed to be given for posts in the Games section. Something to think about maybe. Meanwhile, I do appreciate all your efforts Petra and gang.

We're looking into this, but unlike excluding posts to count towards a section which is a click of a box, excluding reputation from a section actually requires some programming and getting some precise calculations. It may or may not be possible. :dunno: If it is, then we can increase the amount of rep a person can give (though it won't be the insane numbers that it was by default).

I'm such a bad person anyway- I hardly ever hand out rep. It's terrible, as there are so many kick-ass folks on here, and a lot of them post some really cool stuff.

If you folks are tweaking the system I wish you would consider eliminating NEGATIVE rep altogether.
Imo it mostly exists to be abused.
If someone has a problem with a post it can be 1) reported via the report button, 2) reported via a mod 3) responded to via pm 4) responded to directly.
That seems like more than enough options to me without including another for negative rep, which is too often used as a method for retaliation.
I've only received one negative rep (so far) so this is not a personal issue for me; it just seems to make sense.

because negative rep far too often ends up being used as a weapon in personal pissing matches that have little or nothing to do with how much the parties involved are otherwise contributers to the boards.

the only neg rep I received was from a senior member for, of all things, simply posting to (not starting) a thread that, unbeknownst to me, was very similar to another thread. when folks who work to create a better community can get whacked over something that ticky tack, or some personal affront, imo the system needs to be looked at.

I propose a positive rep system only, with the report button to be used in cases of rules violations, and pm's to be used for personal disputes that get too heated for the boards.

No you still have your little repping groups that go round repping each other to build up the points. An ex-member here made this famous to become rep leader and actually thought it meant something. This was before it got squashed and redesigned the first time.

But end of the day it still means rep is worthless. Unless you want MyFreeOnes points and join one of these groups.

Personally I'd just like it to go altogether, as there is no real point to it. As it tells you nothing of the member at all. So is just a game.

as a newcommer to this site iv'e read the posts and explanations of the rep system and still don't really understand it completely. I joined the board for the new ideas, discussions and to meet some new folks and find a few new links and pics. I could care less about having a particular "status". I know who i am and what i'm about, and that's enough for me. If i read something cool or well thought out and explained i'll rep ppl for it as a way of saying thanks, but I don't worry about the negitive part of it. As I understand it, it doesn't affect anything really, and I have much more important things to worry about.

Yeah... don't give people the benefit of the doubt that they already are.
I don't think I've ever really given rep for no good reason nor do I think I was given any just for sake of giving it.
IMHO I think this is kinda crap... but who am I to say.

There are so many good posts I'd like to rep - i.e. pay some f*cking acknowledgement but the system won't allow it.

Giving rep to other people has always been fun, then it is limited from all of sudden? If people have big rep powers, it is their own rep and they deserved it. Petra, I want to know honestly what are the exact motivations of limiting rep??? Rep is just recognition between posters. Perhaps before making that change, asking what members think should have been a good idea. Nothing is "final" as you mention but I don't think personally that giving only rep 5 times per day to people who deserve it is enough.
