Does the size of the image come into it? Or whether or not the person doing it is the thread starter? Is it allowed in certain sections of the board and not others? Or do you need to upload the pic to a hosting site to make it legal? :dunno:

Hehe it's exactly the other way round. The first is just a link. Absolutely fine.

The second is a hotlink. It's direct linking to an image (using the postcard button) and that's considered bandwidth theft.
Except you uploaded the pic on a hosting site made for this purpose such as imagevenue.

Only thread starters are allowed to hotlink pictures in their opening post. (For an ID up to 3 images.)

Exceptions are the game section (even though there are mods that will delete your pics anyway and I would never question their decision)
and some other threads like the fan art thread.

@HeartBroker Do you have a better quality pic of that you made your sig. The one I found was rather nice but you can tell it's a scan of a TV Guide page. Actually see what's on the opposite side of that page.

Is hotlinking as "bandwidth theft" actually theft as in there are laws against it or is it just an unwritten rule of the Internet? :dunno:
 
I heard it can cost money since it uses the other sites bandwidth, which they are paying for, to display the image.
Or am I wrong :dunno:
