Pirate Attacks

Good to know that the Captain is now safe and sound, but sadly the rampant piracy won't go away anytime soon.

I've heard that a lot of these ships are not armed because of fear of mutiny by the crew.

none of the civil vessels are armed. weapons are not allowed by international maritime law. only military ships are allowed to carry weapons.

I don't understand why they don't change the shipping lanes, pirates range is only so far, why not eat the extra cost to go around and avoid multi-million $ ransom demands.

Can anyone tell me why is Hillary laughing bout this thing in one interview?

Why not, her boss was laughing, two weeks earlier about the possibility of GM going bankrupt after all of the bailout expenditures only extended the agony. :dunno:

There has been some rerouting but vessel owners / operators have deadlines to make as you would expect. If the crew agrees to "fuck it" and go the "dangerous" route, they do.
It's got to be a pisser, you know, getting defeated by people from a third world rogue nation like Somalia with their tiny skiff boats. :o

Many of these ships are seized undetected in the night - from what I'm hearing, a small craft in choppy waters often doesn't show up on the mother ships radar, therefore, if these pirates can run parallel with the vessel and get a low percussion grapple hook launcher (sort of an RPG type fixture) to hook a railing or such, the pirates are as good as on board with an :ak47:.

Morocco was the very first country to recognize the United States as a sovereign nation. I believe they were also the first country we signed a treaty of friendship and cooperation with. Without the protection of Great Britian in the region, U.S. trading ships were highly vulnerable to piracy in the Mediterranean Sea. The treaty we signed with Morocco offered U.S. ships safe harbor and protection in Moroccan ports.

What struck Hillary was the irony that here all these years later she was standing next to the Moroccan foreign minister discussing combatting piracy. If you saw the interview it was clear he got the historical connection too.

At least these Somali dudes could get some proper attire...a few hats and swords would really liven the action. Some serious beards and AKs adorned in gold trinkets would be really killer.

I'm good with them being taken out but the corporations should pay, not the taxpayers

Don't you just love how most of the pirates that are captured are just let go by international forces. What's the point? That isn't really going to deter them now is it? My God, why does humanity have to be so stupid?

We may think were smarter now than we have ever been before, but remember back in history when most nations and people of the world considered pirates to be "an enemy of humanity" and killed them on sight if a military ship caught them on the water because they were such a threat? Now...we just let them go.

If you can make off with millions and just be let go without your weapons if your captured by a force that had nothing to do with who you hijacked what's the reason for them not to do it?

Whoops!

Somali pirates attack French military flagship

NAIROBI (AFP) – Somali pirates attempted to storm the French navy's 18,000 tonne flagship in the Indian Ocean after mistaking it for a cargo vessel, the French military said on Wednesday.

The crew of La Somme, a 160-metre (525-foot) command vessel and fuel tanker, easily saw off the brazen night-time assault by lightly armed fighters on two lightweight skiffs and captured five pirates, a spokesman said.

"The pirates, who because of the darkness took the French ship for a commercial vessel, were on board two vessels and opened fire with Kalashnikovs," Admiral Christophe Prazuck said in Paris.

La Somme is the French command vessel in the Indian Ocean, overseeing French air, sea and land forces fighting Somali pirates and hunting terrorists under the banner of the US-led Operation Enduring Freedom.

Officers on the ship have directed commando operations to free French hostages in the hands of Somali pirates.

The pirates tried to flee when they realised their mistake but were pursued by French forces who, after an hour-long chase, caught one of the skiffs, Prazuck said.:wave2:
