Pirate Attacks

You would think the operators of cargo ships carrying millions of dollars worth of cargo would think it wise to spend a couple of thousand dollars to protect themselves from being ransomed for millions.

It seems like the perfect market for BWUSA.

ARRRRRR!!!!
(Obligatory pirate comment. Had to get it out of the way.)

was a ship pirated or something? why are you making a thread about pirates?

 Freeones is great but try tuning in to the news occasionally. The short answer though is...yes there were and are ships being pirated nowadays.

ya i know there is ships being pirated nowadays. just seems random to start a thread on it out of no where.

Well it's not "random" and "out of no where (sic)". One of the lead stories in the news right now is a pirate attack involving a hostage standoff. The sixth such attack this week.

Plus, isn't it every man's boyhood dream of being able to fight off pirates from your ship. :1orglaugh

Yeah, but I don't think any boy dreams of their ship being called the Winnipeg...

I agree, I mean what kind of superior technology do these Somali pirates really have? Other than a few boats and some guns. You would think a ship of that size could plow through them no problem ... or does this happen when they are docked? :dunno: If so, dock somewhere else or invest in a security service.

Although these stories do bring a smile to my face and for that to stop would be a shame. :D

The attacks continue because it would almost seem that we condone it, excuse it, permit it, submit to it. We permit and encourage it because we do not fight back immediately, then and there, where it happens ... The defect is there, in our character.

We are a nation(s) of politically corrected, effeminate, measly cowards !
We don't want to offend the sensitivities of our colleagues, friends, alma mater or family so we equivocate and take the "easy way" out. . . or do we ?

I'll watch the port side if somebody takes the bow !

The area of the Indian Ocean off the horn of Africa is notorious for this type of activity. It is a very active shipping lane since it is on the approach to the Suez Canal. It's virtually impossible to eradicate the piracy unless the US maintains a constant fleet presence in that area or we start putting deck guns on all freighters.

Gee, guys...take a second and check any news feed...yeah, a ship was hijacked with an American crew, after a few hours of activity, the crew took back the ship and captured a few pirates.
However, the Captain is being held hostage in a lifeboat by the pirates.
This is developing into a "Movie of the Week"!
One must consider the usual facts...crews are not usually high paid ex-military...they are maintenance workers really, and aren't gonna die protecting a companies insured ship from pirates.
Carrying a crew and security personnel would seem cost prohibitive as vessels would end up being sunk, or severely damaged in firefights, as well as dead and injured crew.
What harm can several automatic weapons do to a slow moving vessel? A lot...they have heavy machine guns, speedy boats, grenade launchers...enough firepower to sink a cargo ship.
And no controlling force in the large area...Somalia is wide open, and has no effective government.

Well, there is pirating going on off the coast of Somalia and Kenya for more than half a year now. Grand scale pirating with military equipment of million dollar tankships and cargo ships, not just the capturing of some fishing boats.

It's not surprising that the American public didn't care until now, because no American ship has been attacked until two days ago.
Well the German, Russian, Greek and Spanish navy are patroling that area for quite some time now. I think the navys (navies?) of other European countries have sent some ships there as well. But without "domestic help" (or whatever you call it) from the Somali government, they can't do that much, only try to prevent or fight off attacks.

The week before last, some pirates attacked what they thought was a cargo ship. Well, bad luck for them it was the German military transport vessel "Spessart". They tried shooting at it, but when the Spessart returned fire and the war vessel "Rheinland-Pfalz" suddenly appeared, they tried to make a run for it....but alas, to no avail...they were taken into custody. Well, if you're that stupid... :D

To be honest with you I wish I was there to see that just the look on there faces could have be worth a million bucks.

Ideally you curtail this kind of activity by interdicting their attacks before they threaten cargo and unarmed crew members. How else do you think naval warships protect themselves from such attacks? A well trained protection force with the right kind of equipment and weapons would be more than a match against these particular pirates and they would be shark bait before they ever knew what hit them. They are pirates but they are terrorists as well IMO and as such ROE protocol ought to be the same as with any other armed terrorist force. Personally, I would float a carrier to some of these hot spots, deploy a couple of Predators, Global Hawks or a couple of helicopter gunships and start sinking their asses where they float to see if that gives them pause to reconsider their actions. Justification? An extension of the GWOT.

I'm still not sure the U.S. public at large necessarily cares now. The U.S. media has been covering this for 2 or 3 years so it's not "news" to some of us and I've had thoughts about this for some time. This is generally a topic of interest amongst former and active U.S. special operator types including security firms like BWUSA. Former U.S. Navy SEAL Kaj Larsen did a news piece on Somali piracy about 2 years ago. So it is resonating with some in the U.S. The question is how to marshal an effective effort against it?

My message to the pirates as in following the U.S. president, is that we are sorry. We are not at war with you. We do not hate pirates, shit we love Pirates Of The Caribbean. So please accept our apologies and let's be friends.

As far as I know we're not nor should we be at war with Islam. What we are and should be at war with is extremists who threaten the safety of U.S. citizens and our allies.

Business as Usual!!!

Not to offend anybody but this piracy seems to make the coasts of Somalia booming...they even have internet nowadays, they can feed their children already, they have put up stores on their shores selling food, cigarettes, meat, bread, these needs will feed the hostages off the coast...

Ironic but true!!! Reality bites!!
